But the meeting was overshadowed by what happened in the streets near the heavily guarded conference centre. Police and protesters clashed, and more than 1 000 people were arrested. A pipe near the seabed broke, and millions of barrels of oil spilled into the water. It took almost three months to cap the leaking well, and many beaches and wildlife areas were polluted.
