CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION In this chapter, the writer explains the background of the study, the research question, the definition of key terms, the objective of the study, the significances of the study, and the organization of the thesis. A. Background of the Study According to Kridalaksana in Chaer (2010: 3), sociolinguistics is used to be defined as a knowledge that studies about kind of language and the variety of the language, and the relation between linguistics and kind of function of languages in a language society. Moreover, sociolinguistics studies about the relationship between language and society. All of those are interested in explaining why people speak differently in different social contexts, and they are concerned with identifying the social functions of language and the way it is used to convey social meaning, examining the way people use language in different social ways (Holmes, 2001: 1). “Language varies according to its uses as well as its users, according to where it is used and to whom, as well as according who is using it. The addressees and the context affect our choice of code or variety, whether language, dialect or style” (Holmes, 2001: 223). There are many types of figurative language such as: metaphor, simile, symbols, personification, apostrophe, synecdoche, metonymy, 1 paradox, hyperbola, understatement, irony, alliteration, oxymoron, allusion, onomatopoeia, antanaklasis, repetition,parallelism, tautology, litotes. Johnny English Reborn is a 2011 British spy comedy film parodying the James Bond secret agent genre and film franchise reboots. The film is the sequel to Johnny English (2003), and stars Rowan Atkinson reprising his role as the title character and directed by Oliver Parker. The film has a slightly darker tone than the previous film but retains Atkinson's signature humor. This film won some awards and nomination; Evening Standard British Film Awards 2012 and Phoenix Film Critics Society Awards 2011 then nominated as Blockbuster of the Year and Best Original Song for “I Believe in You”. Johnny is suddenly called back to MI7, which in his absence has been privatized and renamed Toshiba British Intelligence (a nifty example of product placement spoofing itself?), completes with a corporate slogan, “Spying for You.” The agency’s haughty new boss, code name Pegasus (a deadpan Gillian Anderson), assigns him to Hong Kong to prevent the assassination of the Chinese premier. But before heading into the field, he must undergo a high-tech facial scan from the resident behavioral psychologist (Rosamund Pike, the villainous Bond girl Miranda Frost in “Die another Day”) to whom he takes a fancy. The examination becomes a comic opportunity for an up-close survey of Mr. Atkinson’s facial mobility. In addition, Johnny is a snob and racist teamed up with Tucker (Daniel Kaluuya), a smart black junior agent who has good-humoredly endures Johnny’s outrageous condescension as they pursue three assassins known as 2 Vortex. Joining the rat race are his suave colleague Ambrose (Dominic West) which is idolized by Johnny and a ubiquitous white-haired Asian assassin is identified only as Killer Cleaner (Pik-Sen Lim) who poses as a cleaning woman pushing around a lethal weapon disguised as a vacuum cleaner. In one scene, Johnny tackles a Killer Cleaner looked-alike who turns out to be a stand- in for the queen of England. The movie coasts on the charms of its rubber-faced star, its witty, and easygoing set pieces. One is a rooftop chase in which Johnny calmly uses an elevator and ladder to catch up with a fleeing villain who leaps out of windows. Another involves an office chair that rises and falls during a meeting at the British prime minister whom Johnny has just roundly insulted, sits on his left. Then, there is the bouncing body bag with Johnny inside. After a disastrous mission in Mozambique, British agent (Rowan Atkinson) has retreated to a Tibetan monastery to try to forget his shame. But when he receives an urgent call from MI-7 to lead a mission that only he can handle, English is back in action. Using his questionable combat skills and an assortment of high-tech gadgets, English is along with his new partner. Agent Tucker (Daniel Kaluuya) must foil a plot to kill the Chinese premier. Rowan Atkinson returns to the role of the accidental secret agent who doesn't know fear or danger in the comedy spy-thriller Johnny English Reborn. In his latest adventure, the most unlikely intelligence officer in Her Majesty's Secret Service must stop a group of international assassins before they eliminate a world leader and causes a global chaos. In the years since MI-7's top spy 3 vanished off the grid, he has been honing his unique skills in a remote region of Asia. In the contrary, when his agency superiors learn of an attempt against the Chinese premier's life, they must hunt down the highly unorthodox agent. Now, the world needs him once again and Johnny English is back in action. With one shot at redemption, he must employ the latest in hi-tech gadgets to unravel a web of conspiracy that runs throughout the KGB, CIA and even MI-7 with mere days until a heads of state conference. One man must use every trick in his playbook to protect us all. The reason why the writer chooses Johnny English Reborn film as the source of his research is because the writer likes the main character, Rowan Sebastian Atkinson who is famous for Mr. Bean. The writer feels very interested in what figurative language can be obtained in this parody action film. Not limited in wanting to find out what can be found but whether this parody film can be an appropriate reference as research material. The writer chooses the figurative language was the first one the writer was interested in language style and after doing some further study there was something more interesting and reminded that figurative language is often used in songs, movies, poetry, daily conversations and many more. Moreover, figurative language is an art in language, makes a sentence more interesting and in some cases figurative language itself is a shortcut so that words can be assembled as interesting as possible using figurative language. Figurative language is easier to remember because it has more appeal. 4 B. Research Question According to the above background of the study, the research question can be formulated: How is figurative language realized in Johnny English Reborn film? C. Definition of the Key Terms To avoid misunderstanding, the key terms in this research are explained below: 1. Sociolinguistics Sociolinguistics is the study of the relationship between language and society. Language and society are concerned with identifying the social functions of language and the ways (Holmes, 2001: 1). 2. Figurative Language Figurative language or style is a way of showing mind through a special language that shows the soul and the characteristic of the writer (language user) (Keraf, 2010:113). 3. Johnny English Reborn Johnny English Reborn is a 2011 British spy action comedy film directed by Oliver Parker. The film is sequel to Johnny English (2003) and the second installment in the Johnny English series. It stars Rowan Atkinson reprising his role as the title character. Like its predecessor, the film parodies traits from the James Bond film series and clichés of the spy genre and marks Atkinson and Tim McInnerny's second collaboration after 5 the series Blackadder. Johnny English Reborn was met with mixed reviews but has grossed a total of $160 million worldwide. The film was released in the United Kingdom on October 7, 2011 and topped the country's box office for the next two weekends, before being dethroned by Paranormal Activity 3. It was later released in North America on October 21, 2011. A sequel to the film, Johnny English Strikes Again, is scheduled for a September 20, 2018 release. D. The Objective of the Study The aim of this study is: to analyze figurative language realized in Johnny English Reborn film. E. Significances of the Study The writer expects that the result of the study will be beneficial: 1. Theoretically The result of this study is expected as references to the other researchers who want to study more about figurative language. 2. Practically It tells the advantages of this study for the writer and readers as follows: a. The Writer The result of this research is expected to give more knowledge to writer. The writer is aware that there are a lot of various phenomena of this research especially about figurative language. 6 b. The Readers The result of this study is expected to give information for the readers about figurative language, especially for students of English Education Study Program so they can read this thesis as one of their references for additional information. 3. Pedagogically This research can be useful for English Education Study Program students who are interested in learning about figurative language through film/movies. Besides, the writer hopes this research can enrich their knowledge about sociolinguistics. F. Organization of the Thesis Chapter I is introduction. The first chapter contains background of the study, research question, definition of the key terms, objective of the study, significances of the study, and organization of the thesis. Chapter II is review of related literatures. The second chapter contains theoretical study, previous studies, and theoretical framework. Chapter III is method of investigation. The third chapter contains research design, the source of data, technique of data collection, and technique of data analysis. Chapter IV is findings and interpretation. Chapter V is conclusion and suggestions. 7.
