Outfield Defensive Alignments The diagrams on page two of this document illustrate the four Outfield alignments we will be playing. Please note these images are very general in nature and we will be adjusting them in an ad hoc manner as play demands. Also note worthy is the diagrams are against right handed hitters. Diagram 1 is your basic four across, we will call this a standard alignment. Diagram 2 is an over shift. The Right Fielder moves towards Center as the other three outfielders cover from approximately second to the foul line. Diagram 3 uses a short fielder against a power hitter. The Left Fielder and Center Fielder and are deep and over shifted with the Right Fielder towards Center Field. The Short Fielder completes the diagram by playing a shallow Left Field either to the Shortstops left or right depending on instruction from the bench. Diagram 4 uses a short fielder against a regular hitter. The Left Fielder and Center Fielder and are at standard depth and may be over shifted with the Right Fielder towards Center Field. The Short Fielder completes the diagram by playing a shallow Left Center-Center Field either to the left or right of second base depending on instruction from the bench. Diagram 5 is a novelty alignment specially designed to blow the mind of a pull hitter with extreme power. This defense may never see the light of day, but it is something we may try. The only extreme part is using the second basemen as a short fielder and daring the hitter to go the other way. Please note the second baseman/ short fielder becomes the relay/cut off man to both sides of the outfield and the Short stop covers second base.
