ANNEX NParks Biodiversity Week (for Community) In conjunction with the International Day for Biological Diversity, members of the public can participate in a series of Community in Nature (CIN) activities from 16 to 22 May 2016. Interested participants are welcome to register with NParks at http://www.nparks.gov.sg/biodiversityweek to participate in the activities. Activity Details Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve Members of the public are invited to share Photo Exhibition (New) photos of their experiences at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. Interested participants can email their photos and accompanying captions about their experience at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, as well as their name, contact number and email address with the subject “SBWR Moments” to [email protected] by 19 May 2016. Selected photos will be exhibited at the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve Visitor Centre from 22 May to 30 June 2016. Firefly Survey @ Pasir Ris Park (New) Volunteers can survey the population of fireflies and firefly larvae at Pasir Ris Park Mangrove as part of the NParks CIN Biodiversity Watch. Page 1 of 5 Mangrove Guided Walk @ Pasir Ris Park This guided walk along the boardwalk in the mangrove forest allows participants to get up close to mangrove biodiversity such as Grey Herons and Giant Mudskippers. Participants can also learn about the different root systems of the hardy mangrove trees in the mangrove forest at Pasir Ris Park. Celebrating Ubin’s shores (New) Members of the public will be able to appreciate Singapore’s biodiversity on the rich shores of Pulau Ubin in two fun-filled sessions. Session 1: Introduction to mangrove and mangrove arboretum planting Participants can get their hands dirty while contributing to mangrove reforestation efforts by planting mangrove saplings. Participants can also discover how these plants are suited to the mangrove habitat. Session 2: Crafty crabs! Participants can learn about the species of crabs living on the shores and mudflats of Chek Jawa. They will also engage in craft activities by folding their own kampong crabs with an assortment of leaves. Orchid Garden Tour @ National Orchid Participants can explore the beauty and Garden, Singapore Botanic Gardens diversity of orchids in the National Orchid Garden. Date: 21 May 2016, Saturday Time: There will be four tour sessions. 9am to 10am (English) 10am to 11am (English) 11am to 12pm (English) 4pm to 5pm (English and Mandarin) Meeting point: Singapore Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre (Nassim Gate) Fees: Admission fees into National Orchid Garden apply. Tree-tagging at Tampines Eco Green In the following tree-tagging activity, (New) volunteers will attach tags to the trunks and at the same time, learn about the uses of various trees. This will enable park visitors to identify the trees of Tampines Eco Green. The data collected will also provide a better understanding of the distribution of tree species in Tampines Eco Green. NParks Biodiversity Week (for Schools) Schools are also encouraged to participate in the SGBioAtlas Challenge for students to learn more about Singapore’s rich flora and fauna. Programme Details The SGBioAtlas Challenge (New) As part of Hwa Chong Institution’s efforts to raise awareness on the importance of biodiversity, students from Project Veritas are organising a photography competition Information accurate as of 29 April 2016. Students can take photographs of flora and fauna in their school and submit them by 29 May 2016 via the SGBioAtlas application developed by NParks. The top three winners and 15 merit award winners will be selected to win attractive prizes. Through participating in the competition, students will become more aware of the flora and fauna in Singapore and appreciate the biodiversity around them.
