Andrews has learned that lesson to near perfection as you will notice in this issue of Contributing Editors Focus. Yes the institution was founded in Battle Creek 135 years ago. It Tami Condon (BS ’91) reopened as Emmanuel Missionary College in Berrien Springs 106 years ago Brent Geraty (MA ’91) now. And it became Andrews 50 years ago. We are coming of age, but we are Keri Suarez (BA ’01) not growing old—just take a look around campus and see how young we are. Designer Observe the hundreds of new students just barely 18 years of age milling Matt Hamel (AT ’05) about the 67-year old Nethery Hall. Or think of the 80+ trees lining the new university entrance planted barely two years ago, so young and spindly Writers Herb Helm (BA/BS ’78, MA/MAT ’80) compared to the 110-year old wrinkled Norwegian spruces still standing Ann-Marie Jones so many years after President Sutherland planted them along the original Douglas Jones (MA ’80) college entrance. In this issue of Focus, there are two articles illustrating this very point. One deals with our 50-year celebration as a university Photographers Bradley Austin which Elder Jan Paulsen, General Conference president, helped us kick off; Justin Jeffery (BMus ’04) the other reports on the latest in student learning—a story of five teachers Anthony James who took their students, their classrooms, their textbooks and laptops to Douglas Jones (MA ’80) Tanzania to offer 12 college credits during the month of May. Martin Lee There is a lesson in this for educators and Christians. Our future and the future of our civilization depend upon its success. Perhaps that is why university campuses often look so old, but are preoccupied with what is so new. And that happens when its members like our students find Frances Faehner (BSW ’76, EdD ’07) new and invigorating ways to learn and believe. Andrews is a good place for that to happen.
