Also becoming members of the panel are Jamie Gorelick, a former deputy attorney general; Jane Harman, former U.S. congresswoman; and recently retired Adm. Gary Roughead, a former chief of naval operations. Cartwright stepped down as JCS vice chairman in August and Roughead stepped down as CNO last month. The Defense Policy Board provides the secretary, deputy secretary and undersecretary for policy with independent, informed advice and opinion on matters of defense policy. Returning to the board are: John Hamre, the panel's chairman and a former deputy defense secretary during the Clinton administration. He is now president of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Harold Brown, former defense secretary during the Carter administration. J.D. Crouch; deputy national security adviser to President George W. Bush. Richard Danzig, a former Navy secretary during the Clinton administration who is now chairman of the Center for a New American Security. Rudy de Leon, a former deputy defense secretary during the Clinton administration. He is now senior vice president of national security and international policy at the Center for American Progress. Chuck Nagel, former Republican senator from Nebraska who is now chairman of the Atlantic Council. Retired Gen. Jack Keane, a former Army vice chief of staff who is now chairman of the Institute for the Study of War. Henry Kissinger, former national security adviser and secretary of state. Frank Miller, a special assistant to President George W. Bush and a senior director for defense policy and arms control on the National Security Council staff. John Nagl, a former Army lieutenant colonel who is now president of the Center for a New American Security. Sam Nunn, former Democratic senator from Georgia who is the chairman of CSIS. Joseph Nye, a former chairman of the National Intelligence Council and assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs in the Clinton administration, who is now a Distinguished Service Professor at Harvard University. William Perry, a former defense secretary during the Clinton administration who is now the Michael and Barbara Berberian Professor at Stanford University. James Schlesinger, former defense secretary during the Nixon administration. Brent Scowcroft, a retired Air Force lieutenant general who served as national security adviser to President George H.W. Bush. Sarah Sewall, the first deputy assistant secretary for peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance during the Clinton administration who is now a lecturer at Harvard University's Kennedy School.
