OUR MISSION To preserve and protect the environment and ecosystem of General Stark Mountain, including its recreational access and historic value, and to support programs that promote and sustain that environment for the enjoyment of present and future generations. Since its inception in 2000, The Stark Mountain Foundation (SMF), a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, has worked closely with organizations such as the Preservation Trust of Vermont, the Green Mountain Club and the Mad River Glen Cooperative to preserve the unique and historic environment of Stark Mountain. Our Recent Projects: Contributions to Stark Mountain Foundation Support: Historic Preservation-Stark Mountain Foundation has • Ski and Hiking Trail Maintenance partnered with the Preservation Trust of Vermont to raise $1.8 million to restore Mad River Glen’s historic Single • Tree Regeneration and Reforestation Chair, and is currently partnering with Mad River Glen’s • Erosion Control $6.5 million Preserve Our Paradise Campaign to preserve and sustain the classic New England ski experience. • Environmental Education Initiatives include: Mountain Preservation, Youth and • Need Based Scholarships for Environmental and Family Development, Community Preservation, and improvements to Skier Safety & Services. Recreational Programs Green Mountain Club Partnership-Stark Mountain • Historic Preservation Foundation, Mad River Glen, and the Green Mountain Club work closely to steward the Long Trail as it crosses Stark Mountain, including maintaining the Stark’s Nest summit hut, Glen Ellen Lodge, and Theron Dean Shelter. Education-With generous support from the Tauck Foundation, Stark Mountain Foundation maintains the Kent Thomas Nature Center, open year round, where skiers, snowshoers, and hikers of all ages can enjoy interpretive displays, geologic information, and animal tracking guides related to Stark Mountain.
