INTA Archives Research Guide for Elizabeth Towne Elizabeth Towne (1865-1960) Elizabeth Towne created the metaphysics journal Nautilus in 1909 in Portland, Oregon. She moved to Holyoke in 1880 to marry William Elmer Towne, vice president and secretary of her company called the Elizabeth Towne Company, Inc., after her first marriage to Joseph Holt Struble ended. Towne was instrumental in creating the New Thought movement, which centered on the power of self-help, self-healing, and positive thinking. She believed that being a vegetarian, having strong Christian beliefs, and exercising on a daily basis would assure longevity and happiness. The magazine eventually had 90,000 subscribers and was circulated around the world. She was an international lecturer for the International New Thought Alliance and served on many prominent boards and clubs, including the Hampden County Women's Club of Western Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Federation of Women's Clubs, and the Business and Professional Women's Club. In 1912, she and her husband sat as delegates at the convention of 1916 as one of the three state committeewomen of the Progressive party in 1913 and also served on the board of directors of the Massachusetts Federation of Progressive women. She was the first woman alderman-at-large in December 1926 and the first woman to declare her candidacy for mayor of Holyoke in 1928. She was known as a pioneer of truth and inspiration for the citizens of Holyoke and internationally.
