A golf club qualifies for membership if it is in Maryland, the District of Columbia, Delaware, Virginia, or West Virginia and is a member of its local, state or regional golf association. The Association conducts championships on a scratch basis, oversees several USGA qualifying rounds and participates with the Golf Association of Philadelphia in the annual Mason-Dixon Match. The Middle Atlantic Amateur champions include Walker Cuppers George Voigt, Roland MacKenzie, Billy Howell, Deane Beman, Bill Hyndman, Dale Morey, Marty West, Nathaniel Crosby, Davis Love III, and Billy Hurley III. West III 1997 Pat Tallent BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BALTIMORE COUNTRY CLUB Baltimore Country Club was founded on January 12, 1898 at its Roland Park location. The Club was a success from the start, with 600 members enjoying its 150-acre facility less than five miles from downtown Baltimore. Just one year after opening, the Club gained immediate recognition in the golf world by hosting the fifth United States Open Championship, won by Willie Smith of Scotland. By the 1920s the decision was made to acquire land to the north of the city and expand the popular golfing amenities to a second location. The East Course at Five Farms, designed by A. W. Tillinghast, officially opened in September of 1926 and was instantly recognized as a masterpiece of golf course architecture. The A. W. Tillinghast designed par 70 East Course, with back-to-front pitched greens, limited penalty areas, and 96 bunkers, has received many honors, including making Golfweek's list of "America's Top 100 Classic Courses" (pre-1960) numerous times, most recently in 2020. It is also listed as the best Classic or Modern (post 1960 design) Course in the state of Maryland. A restoration project was completed in 2015 by Keith Foster, bringing the course back to Tillinghast's original 1924 design. Baltimore Country Club has hosted the Middle Atlantic Amateur Championship fourteen times, six at the old Roland Park site (that course is gone), including the first in 1902, and eight on the East Course. The most recent was played in 2012 and was won by Andrew Rice with a score of 279 (-1). In addition to numerous Maryland State Amateurs (14) and Opens (7 including this year), the club hosted the 1899 U. S. Open (won by Willie Smith at Roland Park), 1928 PGA Championship, 1932 U. S. Amateur, 1965 Walker Cup, 1988 U. S. Women’s Open, 2007 – 2009 Senior Players Championship, and the 2017 – 2018 Big10 Championship. Baltimore Country Club is one of only two clubs in the world to have hosted a Men's U.S. Open, a PGA Championship, a Men's U.S. Amateur, a U.S. Walker Cup, and a U.S. Women's Open, and a Champions Tour Major. Eligibility: Entries are open to male amateur golfers who have USGA Handicap Indexes not exceeding 3.0 under the World Handicap System at time of entry. A contestant must be an amateur and a member of a club which belongs to a local, state, or regional golf association. App. 75% of the field will be members of MAGA member clubs. The field will be limited to 132 players. Acceptance of an entry will be based upon handicap index plus past performance in MAGA and other recognized amateur events. Schoolboy entries (17 and under) are by invitation only - Juniors may submit a request for an invitation and must submit a paper entry. They will not be able to enter on-line. Entries are subject to rejection at any time (including during the Championship) by the Executive Committee of the MAGA. The reason for rejection may include unbecoming conduct. Amateur Status: All players must conform to the USGA Rules of Amateur Status. Entries: Form, Fee, and Opening and Closing Dates: Players shall apply on MAGA forms, obtainable from Member Clubs or http://www.middleatlanticga.org. Do not combine entry fees for other events. Entry fee of $275.00 shall be paid by every player. Entries open on Thursday, July 1 at 9:00 AM. Entries close on Thursday, September 16 at 6:00 PM. Entry fee will be refunded regardless of reason if MAGA is notified before the close of entries. After the close of entries, an entry fee will be refunded, less $25.00, in the event of injury or illness if requested not later than Monday, September 28. Entry fee will not be refunded after the start of the event. Minors must submit a paper entry. Player Notification: Players will be notified by e-mail upon receipt of their application. They will be notified again as soon as their application is accepted. A waiting list will be established if the tournament is over subscribed. Schedule: Fifty-four (54) holes of stroke play with 18 holes scheduled for each day. After 36 holes, the field will be cut to the low 60 scores and ties for the final round. R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings: The Middle Atlantic Amateur is a Counting Event in the R&A’s World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR). Awards, Ties, and Playoffs: The Champion, runner-up, and third place finisher will receive a Crystal Award. The top twenty-five finishers (based on a full field) will receive gift certificates. The Champion’s name will be engraved on the permanent sterling silver Championship Trophy that was crafted in 1902. The Low Schoolboy will receive an award. In the event of a tie for the Championship, the winner shall be determined immediately after the certification of scores by a hole-by-hole playoff. A tie for the Low Schoolboy prize will be broken by the low final round total, and then by the USGA recommended method by breaking ties. Footwear (including during practice rounds): It is a condition of the competition that shoes with traditionally designed spikes (regardless of composition, i.e. Ceramic, plastic, etc.) or spikes, regardless of design, comprised either entirely or partially of metal (if such metal may come in contact with the course) are prohibited during the stipulated round. Penalty for breach: Disqualification. Automotive Transportation: A player may either ride in a cart, carry his own bag, or bring his own caddie. Players are responsible for paying the cart fee if they choose to ride. See the information page for cart fees.
