Lee John STEEP is a township of scattered houses, extending from 2 to 4 miles N. by ,V, of Petersfield, and containing 581 souls and 2641 acres of la.nd, including part of Stroud Common, Bowyer's Common, Steep Marsh, Aldersnap, Downgate, Ash­ ford, Dunhill, a.nd other farms, &c. It is in the Parliamentary Borough of Peters­ field. Its parish includes also the tithings of North and SouthAmbersham, which are in Sussex. The Bishop of Winchester is lord of the manor of Steep, and F. W. T.V. Wentworth, Esq., is lord of Ashford ma.nor; but part of the soil belongs to the Qua.ntock, Carter, Eames, Flood, and other families, partly free and partly copyholders. Ashford House, occupied by Admiral Edward Hawker, is a neat mansion with woody grounds, on the banks of a rivulet, near Old Stonor and other hills, which command beautiftll prospects. Steep Church is an antique fabric, which was repajred in 1839, at the cost of £370. It has a small tower and fiye bells, and in its chancel are several monuments belonging to the Baker family. The benefice is a curaay, annexed to East Meon Vicarage. The Rev. Thos. Floud, of Petersfield, is the officiating curate. The National School was built in 1843, at the cost of £150. Its parish adjoins Sussex, and is in the Parliamentary Borough of Petersfield. It contains 748 souls and 3079 acres of land, divided into the tithings of Liss Abbas and Liss Turney, the former of which belonged to the Abbess of Winchester, at Domesday Survey. The commons (which adjoin W oolmer Forest) have recently been en­ closed, drained, and new roads made across tlwm. Sir Chas. Wm.
