International Berlin, Germany Travel Program October 8–13, 2018 Leadership Circle ITINERARY Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco Berlin, Germany: October 8 – 13, 2018 Artist Studios An inconspicuous building in an otherwise residential Berlin neighborhood is home to the studios of two of the world’s most renowned contemporary artists, Olafur Eliasson and Ai Weiwei . Our group will have the rare opportunity to visit their working studios. Olafur Eliasson (b. 1967) is an Ai Weiwei (b. 1957) is a Chinese Icelandic-Danish artist known for creating contemporary artist and political activist sculptures and large-scale installation art whose artistic practice is wide ranging. ITINERARY Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco Berlin, Germany: October 8 – 13, 2018 Exclusive Tours VIP Tour: Staatliche Museen zu Berlin The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (the Berlin State Museums) constitute an encyclopedic institution with seventeen museums. The immense holdings, documenting the evolution of human culture from its beginnings, are among the most significant in Europe, preserving around 4.7 million objects that encompass the fields of art, archaeology, and ethnology. Our group will enjoy several special tours in selected exhibitions and collections of the Staatliche Museen. VIP Tour: KINDL—Zentrum für Zeitgenössische Kunst (Center for Contemporary Art) Formerly the Kindl brewery in Berlin’s Neukölln district, this unconventional art space provides three different exhibition formats. Since October 2016, KINDL has presented international contemporary art throughout three floors of the Power House and in the spectacular Boiler House. The Brew House is now once again open to the public; we will enjoy a guided tour. Exclusive Tour: Deutscher Bundestag On an exclusive tour of the Bundestag, the national parliament of the Federal Republic of Germany, we will learn about the history of the iconic building from its construction in 1884 until the reconstruction including the remarkable glass dome by Norman Foster in 1992. The renowned collection of the Bundestag features seminal works by artists such as Joseph Beuys, Georg Baselitz, Jenny Holzer, Ellsworth Kelly and Christo. After our tour, we will dine at the spectacular Käfer Rooftop Garden Restaurant next to the Reichstag dome overlooking Berlin. Exclusive Tour: Feuerle Collection Our group will enjoy a private tour of the Feuerle Collection, a new private art museum in Berlin dedicated to Désiré Feuerle’s collection. Notably located in a former Second World War telecommunications bunker, this collection juxtaposes international contemporary artists with Imperial Chinese furniture and Southeast Asian sculptures. ITINERARY Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco Berlin, Germany: October 8 – 13, 2018 Private Collections Private Collection Tour: Boros Collection Converted from its World War II function as an air raid shelter, the Boros Bunker is now home to Germany’s most prominent private collection of contemporary art, comprising works by international artists dating from 1990 to the present. Our group will tour the collection with Karen and Christian Boros – owners of one of Germany’s leading media agencies – and enjoy refreshments in the private penthouse atop the Bunker. Private Collection Tour: Heinz and Ulla Pietzsch Clear lines of architecture showcase this extensive collection of modern art, including works by celebrated painters Balthus, Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, René Magritte, Joan Miró, and Yves Tanguy. Our group will be greeted by Heiner and Ulla Pietzsch to view the collection they began cultivating in the mid-1960s. Their Grundewald house is itself a work of art. Private Collection Tour: Julia Stoschek Collection The Julia Stoschek Collection features contemporary international art with a focus on time-based media art. The collection opened in 2007 in Dusseldorf and comprises installations, videos, photographs, paintings, and sculptures. To supplement the main Dusseldorf location, an additional space opened to the public in Berlin in 2006. Our visit will include a viewing of an exhibition dedicated to the work of American video artist Arthur Jafa. Private Castle in Märkisch-Wilmersdorf: Michael Werner One of the most extraordinary figures in the German art scene, Michael Werner opened his first gallery in the 1960s at the age of 24. He represents artists such as Georg Baselitz, A. R. Penck, Anselm Kiefer, and Sigmar Polke. We will travel to the countryside outside Berlin to visit his private mansion, housed in a nineteenth- century take on a medieval castle. ITINERARY Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco Berlin, Germany: October 8 – 13, 2018 Galleries Gallery Visit: Contemporary Fine Arts Gallery (CFA) Located in West Berlin, the CFA was founded in 1992 and is now one of the most famous galleries in Berlin, representing an amazing array of international artists. We will see works by Cecily Brown, Gert & Uwe Tobias, Dana Schutz, and many more. Gallery Visit & Lunch: neugerriemschneider The neugerriemschneider is an understated but pioneering gallery in East Berlin. Since its founding in 1994, neugerriemschneider has helped to establish international artists, including Olafur Eliasson, Sharon Lockhart, and Ai Weiwei, by exhibiting some of their first solo shows. Neugerriemschneider will host us for lunch at the kitchen of artist Rirkrit Tiravanija, located atop of the studios of Olafur Eliasson and Ai Weiwei. Gallery Visit & Tour: East Side Gallery A monument to the fall of the Berlin Wall, the East Side Gallery is a series of 105 murals, painted in 1990, on a large remnant of the Berlin Wall. The stirring artworks document a time of change and express euphoria and hope for a better, freer future for all people of the world. We will enjoy a guided tour of this important landmark. ITINERARY Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco Berlin, Germany: October 8 – 13, 2018 Cultural Experiences Boat Tour: Spree River Flowing through Berlin, the Spree River runs past some of the city’s most famous buildings and sites. Whether passing the government district or Museum Island, there is no better way to go sightseeing through Germany’s capital. Concert: Berlin Philharmoniker To take advantage of all that Berlin has to offer, we will attend a concert by the world-renowned Berlin Philharmoniker in its iconic building by Hans Scharoun. The concert will be conducted by Jakub Hr ůš a, who has been described as being “on the verge of greatness.” He will conduct pieces by Dvo řák, Martinů and Janáček, with Frank Peter Zimmermann on the violin. After the concert, Hr ůš a will join us for a reception in the building’s green room. Tour & Shopping: Kaufhaus des Westens Opening its doors in 1907, Kaufhaus des Westens, known as KaDeWe, presents an array of goods from around the world. Along with exclusive brands and designer goods, KaDeWe also houses a library, combining a shopping day with a cultural experience. ITINERARY Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco Berlin, Germany: October 8 – 13, 2018 Excursion to Potsdam, Germany Cultural Site: Schloss Sanssouci Art Collection: Villa Henckel Art Collection: Villa Schöningen Our excursion to Potsdam will include many special experiences, such as a visit to Sanssouci , the summer palace of Frederick the Great, king of Prussia. The palace’s location, set amid idyllic vineyard terraces, and the grandeur its well-preserved eighteenth-century interior, allow visitors to delve into the world of the “philosopher of Sanssouci,” as Frederick was known. We will also visit two historic residences: the Villa Schöningen and the Villa Henckel, both owned by Mathias Döpfner, CEO of the media group Axel Springer and one of Germany’s most influential media persons. The Villa Schöningen —adjacent to the Glienicke Bridge, at the border of Berlin and Potsdam, formerly bridging East and West Germany—houses a collection dedicated to the historical and symbolic importance of this “Bridge of Spies,” where, spy exchanges took place during the Cold War era. Villa Henckel is Mathias Döpfner’s private residence and houses his remarkable collection of female nudes from Lucas Cranach to contemporary interpretations.
