Renowned Turkish Composer Saygun dies Istanbul (DGPI)-Turkish composer, Prof. Ahmet Ad- nan Saygun, one of the in­ novators of contemporary Turkish music, died in Istan­ bul on 6 January. Ahmet Ad nan Saygun was interested in music since childhood, and after teaching music in Izmir High School, he was granted a government scholarship to study music in Paris. In the years that followed he taught music at the Istanbul Municipality School of Music. During this period he began studying Turkish folklore. Saygun also taught at the Ankara and Istanbul State Schools of Music, and gave lectures on musical composition at Mitnar Sinan University. In 1971, Saygun was given the title of 'State Artist ’ and in 1985 was made professor. Ahmet Adnan Saygun composed the operas “Oz- soy” (the first Turkish opera), “Ta$bebek”, "Aslt and Kerem", Kôroj>lu", "Gilgamis” and also the world famous oratorio “Yunus Emre”. He has also composed numerous concer­ tos, sonatas and symphonies. Saygun’s music is a blend of European music of the post-romantic period, impres­ sionism and oriental themes. The composer was eighty-four years old. République, puis fut nommé enseignant au conservatoire de la mairie d ’Istanbul. C ’est à cette période qu’il a com­ mencé ses recherches sur le folklore turque. Saygun a éga­ lement travaillé aux conserva­ toires d ’Ankara et d ’Istanbul. En 1971, il a obtenu le titre d ’artiste d ’Etat et en 1985 de professeur. Saygun est l’auteur de divers opéras: "Ozsoy”, “Ta$bebek”, “Kôroglu” et “Gtlgamtf” et également de l’oratorio "Yunus Emre”. Décédé à l’âge de 84 ans, l’artiste a particulièrement tra­ vaillé, dans ses oeuvres, les influences de la musique populaire et de la musique classique turques.
