They will observe the effects of slumping in the area and how the land use around the beach can be affected. Data will be collected to show the coastal processes that are occurring, focusing on Long Shore Drift in the area. There is the opportunity to visit a managed and unmanaged area for a comparison. Studland Beach Coastal Processes and Defences On an ever-changing coastline, groups will study the beach’s defences that are in place and how effective they are. They will observe the effects of slumping in the area and how the land use around the beach can be affected. Data will be collected to show the coastal processes that are occurring, focusing on Long Shore Drift in the area. There is the opportunity to visit a managed and unmanaged area for a comparison. Coastal Ecosystems Heathland habitats are one of the most fragile ecosystems in Britain. Studying the sand dune ecosystem, groups will compare a typical profile to what they are measuring. They will look at the topography of the dunes and how the vegetation changes as you move away from the sea. Groups will look at the impacts humans are having on this environment. Old Harry’s Rocks Coastal Formations Coastal formations are studied as part of a coastal walk. Groups will look at the formations of bays and headlands from above and see how a discordant coastline can be shaped by erosion. They will walk to the end of the headland and observe the famous stack formations at Old Harry’s Rocks. Different types of erosion will be discussed and groups will be encouraged to draw and annotate a field sketch to show the processes and features. Lulworth Cove & Durdle Door Coastal Geomorphology Starting at the arch formation Durdle Door, groups will look at how coves are formed along a concordant coastline. Through a coastal walk, they will trace the cove formation looking at different stages in the formation, finishing at an Embryo Cove. “Best organised field centre we have been to”.
