Our Board-approved a 2020-23 Strategic Plan update that reflects our accomplishments to date, along with revised actions and KPIs to ensure Sport Calgary remains an effective voice for sport in our city going forward. This year is notable for being a year of leadership transition at Sport Calgary. Our new Board Chair is Mary Moran, President & CEO of Calgary Economic Development (CED), who is entering her sixth year on our volunteer Board of Directors. Under her leadership at CED, there has been a greater focus on Calgary’s competitiveness in the new economy including in the areas of talent development, innovation, placemaking and being a business friendly city. As well, Catriona Le May Doan has moved into the role of President & CEO of Sport Calgary. She has played a critical role in Sport Calgary’s recent growth, as we transformed from a small group of sport enthusiasts into an official Civic Partner of the City of Calgary, representing over 275 sport member organizations throughout the city. In 2019, we continued to improve our financial results and event attendance, including our signature All Sport events. A new digital platform is in place, ready to tell the exciting stories of our members, with additional staff resources managing this ever- expanding content. 3 Sport Calgary advocated for many important causes over the past year. This included the support for a new multisport Fieldhouse at Foothills Athletic Park, which is being stewarded by the City of Calgary’s Foothills Athletic Park Redevelopment Advisory Committee (FAPRAC). This facility, if built, will be an important community gathering space for all Calgarians. As well, Sport Calgary was supportive of the downtown Events Centre that will keep the Calgary Flames in our city for decades to come. We also advocated for improved safety measures for women in Canadian sport, and broad civic investment in community-level infrastructure. We assisted with the Special Olympics Provincial Games, Red Deer 2019 Canada Games, Respect Group, and local Indigenous schools. We also were public supporters of the successful launch of Cavalry FC, and hosted a Leadercast event in May that had local kids learning from leaders from across the world. The civic Sport for Life Policy delivers a mandate to Sport Calgary to support Calgary Recreation in designing and delivering sport programs and initiatives, building infrastructure, and allocating amenity use. We have a defined role to build the capacity of local sport organizations through education, training, and best practices, as well as lead a community advisory committee. Sport Calgary is proud of our work with community partners to promote sport as part of a larger community. This includes work with local school boards, PLAY Calgary, facility advisory groups, Comrie’s Sports Bank, KidSport, Dare to Care, Respect Group, and others. We continue to promote an understanding of Canadian Sport for Life, a framework to engage education, health, sport and recreation sectors with the goal of improving the quality of sport and physical activity for all Canadians. Our organization acts as a central resource to the sport community, functioning as a liaison and facilitator for connections between sport organizations in Calgary. Sport organizations are also able to contact Sport Calgary for assistance with grant applications and governance best practices, including organizational bylaws. We have a zero-tolerance stance on sexual harassment, bullying, and discrimination in sport. The modern re-design, completed with the expert support of Evans Hunt, allows Sport Calgary to serve the needs of its 275+ member organizations. It is constantly updated with the latest information possible by our small team of marketing and communications staff. The digital platform showcases news, events, member profile videos, podcasts, facility and sport directors, job and volunteer opportunities, research, and much more. Through these mediums, Sport Calgary is successfully telling the stories of our sport organization members. These stories inspire Calgarians of diverse backgrounds to discover new sports, re-engage with familiar activities, and learn more about our member organizations. The website is a leading source for community resources. This includes information and links that support active living, funding programs, general sport and recreation, grants and awards, professional development, sport advocacy, fair play, and volunteer/board development. 5 CELEBRATION OF SPORT Calgary’s Celebration of Sport honours the countless athletes, coaches, parents, volunteers, facilities, sport organizations, and businesses that make Calgary an incredible sport city. This year’s event at WinSport saw over 500 people attend an afternoon reception co-hosted by Catriona Le May Doan and Rob Kerr. Attendees were treated to presentations and discussions on current sport issues in the city, including a hot stove discussion with Olympic gold medallist Beckie Scott. Our 2019 award winners, presented by Evans Hunt: RON SOUTHERN BUSINESS AND SPORT AWARD RBC FINANCIAL Over the years, RBC has supported various sport organizations through community initiatives, donations, community investments and employee volunteer activities. Some of the efforts include Alberta Junior Hockey League, Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference’s Make Some Noise for Mental Health, Alberta Summer and Winter Games, Spruce Meadows, RBC Race for the Kids, the Olympics, and Play Hockey/Learn to Play programs. PERRY CAVANAGH SPORT LEADERSHIP AWARD REPSOL SPORT CENTRE This is the first year for the renamed Perry Cavanagh Sport Leadership Award, in recognition of Perry’s significant contributions to Calgary’s sport culture. Repsol Sport Centre, housed under their iconic tent, continues to excel in a hyper competitive market. The facilities more than 250 dedicated staff all strive to push the boundaries on sport and recreation excellence, driving innovation in training and competition, and building upon their world-class reputation as the best place to train for excellence, compete with champions and play hard all under one roof. Their sport roots continued to flourish this year, as they hosted 57 sporting events that had teams and athletes from all over the world competing at the facility. 6 ALL SPORT EVENTS ALL SPORT ONE DAY The most recent instalment of All Sport One Day showcased 77 sports across 20 facilities. Sport Calgary would like to thank all facilities, sport organizations, parents and youth for using All Sport One Day to connect with their community through sport while promoting a healthy lifestyle. Select sessions were also open to teenagers to try a new sport. By working with key sport organizations and facilities in the city, our goal is to provide adults with a positive re-introduction to sport and physical activity. Through discovery/introductory sessions, they can become more active. Leadercast is the largest one-day leadership event in the world and broadcasts live each year from Atlanta to select locations around the globe, adding some amazing local, sport themed, content that will inspire us all to be stronger leaders. As part of the local hosting model, we also welcomed 30 local high school student athletes to take in the day with us as a way for this event to give back and build up our future leaders. SCHOOL VISITS Sport Calgary continues to foster our working relationship with local elementary schools. President & CEO Catriona Le May Doan visited schools in the spring, promoting All Sport One Day to kids and teachers, as well as sport videos and resources for schools to use. EMPOWERING WOMEN & GIRLS THROUGH SPORT Sport Calgary, in partnership with Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame, presented a panel discussion about empowering women & girls through sport. OLYMPIC OVAL OPEN HOUSE/LIONS FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS In September, Sport Calgary took part in the Olympic Oval’s inaugural Open House event, where it promoted All Sport One City to the public. Sport Calgary connected with hundreds of students and families in promoting the events and services Sport Calgary offers to the public.
