Duncan Nicholas Profile Duncan is the Director of DN Journal Publishing Services and has over 14 years’ experience working in the journal publishing industry. Duncan provides independent editorial consultancy and training courses to publishers, researchers and the wider scholarly community, working with clients around the world in Europe, Asia, Middle East, Africa, and North America. Duncan writes and delivers training workshops and presentations to editorial staff and researchers of all levels of academic experience and seniority on a wide range of topics, and has been involved in the development, creation of content and recording of online learning materials, including the Publons Peer Reviewer Academy. His workshops include editorial office management, writing and journal publishing skills, peer review, journal metrics, open science, social media & promotion, publishing & research ethics, and copyright & licensing. Sep. 2012 – Nov. 2015 Journal Development Editor Taylor & Francis As the senior co-founding member of a small team, I was responsible for enhancing quality in all editorial aspects of journal publishing for the Taylor and Francis Group. Main roles included the development of specific journal titles through evidence-based analysis and broader subject-area related research; creating and leading inter-departmental projects related to new trends and innovations in academic publishing; creating best practice guidelines for internal staff and journal editors, speaking at company- wide academy days; and enhancing relationships with key internal and external stakeholders. My role involved working collaboratively across all departments of the company - editorial, peer review systems, production, author services, marketing and business research to enhance reputation, reader usage and sustainability of publications. Apr. 2005 – Sep. 2012 Managing Editor Taylor & Francis For over seven years I dealt with senior academics, journal editors, authors, and reviewers in managing the editorial and peer review processes for around 30 psychology journals across several fields, including cognition, neuroscience and behavioural psychology. I oversaw implementation, ongoing development and daily peer review management of databases and online reviewing sites (ScholarOne Manuscripts); provided detailed analysis and reports to the Publisher and the Journal Editors on an ongoing basis and for annual and quarterly meetings. Created best practice guidelines for other peer review staff and wrote reviewer guidelines for use on individual journal websites. In this role I gained a thorough knowledge and sophisticated aptitude for the academic publishing world. Professional organisations Sep. 2015 – present Vice-President (appointed ay 2018) European Association of Science Editors (EASE) EASE was established in 1983, and has almost 400 members involved in a range of science editing professions and occupations, in over 50 countries around the world. The Association holds a conference every two years in a European city. As Vice-President, I am heavily involved in developing the profile of the Association, providing workshops and toolkits for use by the EASE community, and work at increasing the collaborative efforts between EASE, publishers and other organisations. I have written articles on science communication for their European Science Editing journal, authored guidelines for use by Association members, am involved in Association strategy groups, conference 4 speaking and organisation. For the 2016 conference in June, I will be moderating a panel discussion on certification of editors. In a separate session, I will also be speaking on ways in which editorial offices manage ethical conduct. I regularly conduct interviews with authors of the Association’s Journal European Science Editing, for publication on the EASE blog.
