SEPTEMBER BIRTHDAY ARTIST – “Grandma Moses” In researching an Artist to feature in September, I was delighted to Spring Fling see “Grandma Moses” and I shared September 7th birthdays! April 2021 When I was a boy, my Mom brought home a nicely framed Details to be announced. “Grandma Moses” and hung it in our living room. I think it might have been “Sugaring Off”. She was the first Artist I had ever heard of. She certainly led an amazing life! Please read on. ~ Greg Case Anna Mary Robertson Moses (September 7, 1860 – December 13, 1961), known by her nickname Grandma Moses, was an American folk artist. She began painting in earnest at the age of 78 and is often cited as an example of an individual who successfully began a career in the arts at an advanced age. Her works have been SDP NEWS! shown and sold in the United States and abroad and have been marketed on greeting cards and other merchandise. Moses' paintings are displayed in the collections of many museums. Sugaring Off was sold for US $1.2 million in 2006. The New York Times said of her: "The simple realism, nostalgic atmosphere and luminous color with which Grandma Moses RETREATS portrayed simple farm life and rural countryside won her a wide following.
