This reflects a net addition of 29 vessels with an increase of 0.07 million GT during the calendar year 2019 (Table 1.1, Section 1). 1.2 Out of the 1429 vessels registered as on 31st December, 2019, 972 vessels (68%) with 1.48 million GT were engaged in coastal trade and the remaining 457 vessels (32%) with 11.27 million GT were deployed for overseas trade. Thus the tonnage deployed for overseas trade was 88.4% of Indian GT in contrast to 11.6% of the tonnage deployed for coastal trade (Table 1.1, Section 1). The growth of Indian Shipping Fleet (Overseas & Coastal Trade) during last three years is shown in Chart I. i 1.3 The age profile of Indian merchant shipping vessels as shown in Table 1 indicates that about 41.4% of the fleet was above 20 years of age, 20.5 % of the fleet was between 6-10 years, 10.7 % of the fleet was between 0-5 years while 12.6 % & 14.8 % of the fleet were in the age groups of 16-20 years and 11-15 years respectively. The detailed age composition of Indian Shipping Fleet engaged in coastal & overseas trade is given in Table 2.3 (Section 2) & Table 3.3 (Section 3).
