BATTLING A HEALTH THREAT WITHIN A HEALTH THREAT. While New England grapples with the opioid epidemic, another longstanding nemesis continues to pose a threat: HIV/AIDS. Boston University and Brown University, along with their affiliated medical centers, have been working together to reduce infection rates by focusing on opioid users. An NIH grant to support the Providence/Boston Center for AIDS Research helps attract promising young researchers, offering them resources and mentorship as they tackle the relationship between HIV and substance use disorder. Against the backdrop of the region’s deadly opioid epidemic, this timely effort will help save the lives of more Rhode Islanders.
