site-specific recordkeepingTM SCORINGSYSTEM SEMACODE CELL PHONE INSTRUCTIONS SERIES 60 “SMARTPHONE” CELL PHONE: CONFIGURATION AND SETUP FOR SEMACODE IMAGING SOFTWARE AND OPERA INTERNET BROWSER 1. For the following procedure, the wireless mobile phone must be Series 60 (Symbian operating system), as a minimum, one of the following suggested makes and models (although others may be available and may be used if they meet the same criteria): a. Nokia 3650 (also 3600, 3620), 6600, 7610, 7650 b. Siemens SX1 c. Sony Ericsson P800 In addition, the phone must be equipped with Bluetooth capability and I/O message folders for this procedure to work. Otherwise, another ISP access account must be set up at the time of wireless phone purchase for direct Internet access. If this is part of the purchase agreement, the procedures beginning with Step 2 can be performed on the wireless phone directly via the Internet, on the phone itself, and the Bluetooth file transfers are not necessary. Also, if the wireless service provider has already installed the Opera browser in the phone at the time of purchase, that step may be omitted as well. d. Latest updated list at the end of these setup notes 2. Access the Web site http://semacode.org/ via the Internet. After confirming that the wireless phone on hand for setup and configuration is consistent with the current requirements listed on the “hardware support” page of the site (http://semacode.org/hardware/) return to the site’s home page, select the site’s “download” page (http://semacode.org/download/) and follow the instructions show for the specific wireless phone model in hand for setup and configuration. a. If the download is performed on a PC or laptop with Internet connection, it must also have Bluetooth capability and be synchronized with the wireless phone, according to Bluetooth setup instructions b. Certain specific information about the wireless phone, available from the manufacturer and the wireless service provider is required to identify the specific wireless phone to complete the download (this may vary according to phone manufacturer and wireless service provider: check with the purchase point of the phone and wireless service) 3. Following the procedures of Step 2 will result in two “xxx_xxxx_xxxx_xxx.sis” type installation files: one for Semacode and one for Opera (if the browser must be installed: there is a link to Opera from the Semacode site to do this). Whether loaded directly to the phone or to a PC / laptop for Bluetooth transfer, these “.sis” installation files will be placed in the “Inbox” of the wireless phone (follow the instructions in the phone’s owners manual to locate this). Clicking on these files will install Semacode image reading and decoding software and the Opera browser, as needed. Icons will also be placed in the “Main Menu” for the phone during the installation. This completes the installation. How can I download the Semacode application installation file to the cell phone? When I tried it directly through the phone’s on-line Web browser, the error that I got was “unknown file format.” A. When you try to download Semacode’s application installation file directly from the Web, System 60 and Symbian operating system cell phones don’t expect to handle a *.sis file, and the phone doesn’t know how to open it in that operating system. Using a BlueTooth transfer, the *.sis file goes into the Inbox (the same one for text messages), which can accept everything without worrying about the file extension. Then, all that is needed is to go to the Inbox and open the file just like a regular message. Then, the installation application will run normally from that point. SEMACODE CELL PHONE OPERATING HINTS 1. Operation of the wireless phone in Semacode imaging is described in the “About” page (http://semacode.org/about/) in various sections, such as FAQs, history, case studies, etc. Read all material thoroughly and find the best way of operating with the particular phone used. With Opera installed, the browser may be invoked from the “Main Menu” or, when imaging a DataMatrix barcode with the Semacode reader, the Opera browser will access the interpreted URL directly. 2. To create DataMatrix barcodes for use with the Semacode reader, see the “Create” page (http://semacode.org/create/), and follow the instructions for entering the desired URL. Note that java is needed on the PC / laptop that is being used to create the DataMatrix barcode: follow the instructions for downloading this as needed. Other DataMatrix barcode creation programs may be used, but these must always be used in ECC200 mode or straight text mode, only, at this time. Finally, the DataMatrix barcodes must be printed at the SAME SIZE and STRICT PROPORTION as the Semacode/create page makeup (or at least no less than 65% of this size, same proportionality) for proper readability with the current generation of “smartphone” optical systems. Note: the phone’s camera may have “zoom” capability when taking regular pictures, but this is not active during Semacode imaging. 3. Finally, e-mails to Simon Woodside with specific questions will be answered; phone calls are generally not returned. The best approach is to read and understand all available material, on Semacode and Opera Web sites, and the phone’s operator manual and wireless service provider instruction, and learn as much as possible about the process. Following step-by-step should result in a successful installation. For a long time computer scientists have been looking for a cheap, inexpensive way to create a gate between the real world and virtual world of the Internet. Semacodes provides such a solution. By means of special symbols, printable by anyone on any printer, and special software, available for camera phones, connections can be built on a wide scale in a totally decentralized fashion. A Semacode is a small symbol that encodes a standard, web-oriented URL. The URL is embedded into a two-dimensional barcode along with error correction information. When the Semacode reader software snaps the barcode, it launches the embedded URL on whatever web browser is available.
