The Foreword • Acharya: Someone who has walked a particular road and has figured out how to manage the obstacles on that path. This person can help others do the same because they have experience and have solved the problem in their own life, not just information about the subject. Chapter Two • Abhyasa: Daily spiritual practice; specifically, the practice of consciously connecting with who you truly are – your soul circle. • Samadhi: A state of wholeness or complete absorption with your soul circle, or your object of focus. Chapter Four • Adhikara: Spiritual authority, referring to your studentship and commitment to taking responsibility for your inner life. • Sat Vata Parinam Vata: This is your reality, but your reality can change. • Prana: Life force energy. It is more than just breathe – it is the essence of life • Mala: Residue of past experiences that have not been digested • Vikalpa: Refers to the human imagination, or ability to create something that isn’t actually occurring in physical reality. This is the source of anxiety • Svadhyaya: Self-reflection for the purpose of knowing your true Self or soul circle Chapter Five • Kleshas: The five negative states of mind and the root cause of human suffering • Avidya: Misperception, can’t discern between what is changing and what is changeless • Asmita: Ego, or human tendency to identify with the stuff you have and your status • Raga: Attachment, grasping or clinging • Dvesa: Aversion or avoidance • Abhinavesa: Fear, fear of losing something, or of death • Dukha: Suffering • Sukha: Ease or Happiness • Samskara: Pattern, habit or impression • Viveka: Discernment or clarity • Sri: Life affirming • Satya: Truth • Svatantrya: Freedom enhancing Chapter Six • Vitarka: Clunky stage of the change process of settling the anxious mind. • Atha yoga anusasanam: Now is the time for yoga; there is a place within you that is free Chapter Seven • Bhavana: A new vision or positive outlook consciously created for your belief window • Shraddha: Faith, belief, trust or conviction • Smriti: Recollection of a future goal. Remembering your vision, rather than your past Chapter Eight • Vasana: Emotional impressions or triggers Chapter Nine • Tapas: New thought, pattern or behavior toward your bhavana or goal • Isvarapranidhana: Surrender to something bigger, or letting go of what you can’t digest • Praktipaksha Bhavana: Alternate viewpoint; from another perspective to gain clarity Chapter Ten • Sankalpa: Intention or will to change the course of your life • Dharana: To focus your attention in a positive direction • Dhyana: Concentration for an extended period of time on your object of focus • Dharma: That which supports you; or your purpose for right now • Mantra: A statement to traverse the monkey mind and settle into your soul circle.
