General Notes: Peter was Gamekeeper to Sir Hedworth Williamson of Whitburn Hall. Peterand Jane lived in Whitburn as pensioners on the Baronet's Bounty. Peterwas originally a Shoemaker from Gladsmuir, East Lothian. He kept bees,was a crack shot and conversant with all parts of the bible. On 1851 Census he was described as 'maintenant'. Peter married Jane KENLEY [76] [MRIN: 39] about Dec 1798 in Probably Whitburn, daughter of Archibald KENLEY [77] and Unknown. Jane was born in 1761 in Tranent, East Lothian and died in 1851 in Whitburn, Co.Durham aged 90. They had ten children: Peter, Jane, Archibald, Thirdson, John, Fifthson, Thomas, Seconddaughter, Margaret and Jane. General Notes: Jane was aged 90 on the 1851 census and was living as a maintenant withher husband. Jane was 38 at the birth of her first son Peter and 50 at birth of herlast child Jane. The dates of birth and deaths of Peter and Janes children were taken fromthe Parish Records at Whitburn Parish Church, which is were their firstson Peter (also known as 'The Hermit') his wife Elizabeth and son Williamare buried. Peter ALLAN [78] was born on 6 Sep 1799, was christened on 14 May 1803 in Whitburn Parish Church, Co Durham, died on 31 Aug 1850 in Whitburn, Co.Durham aged 50, and was buried in Whitburn Parish Church. The cause of his death was Died of a broken heart. General Notes: aka The Hermit Started in early life in service with his father working for Sir Hedworth Williamson later becoming a gamekeeper to the Marquess of Londonderry who eventually became Viscount Castlereagh. After that he married, became a publican at Whitburn and varied his occupation by working as a foreman at excavation works, taking part in the quarrying of stone from the rocks for the Marsden Lime Kiln, and in 1835 in the construction of the Sunderland Dock. This gave him the idea of making a home on the shores of Marsden Bay and providing accommodation and refreshments on the spot for the picnic parties and visitors. PETER was know as Peter the 'Hermit' due to his excavation of Marsden Grotto making it into a home for his wife and 8 children. There is a book written about him entitled 'The Story of Marsden and Peter Allan' written by a former West Boldon headmaster Mr Alan C Robinson. Medical Notes: In the book written about Peter it is said that he more or less gave up when he had to give up the Grotto because of Government pressure and it is said that he died of a broken heart Noted events in his life were: Baptism: : Whitburn Parish Churchyard. Peter married Elizabeth DUNKNOW [88] [MRIN: 9]. Elizabeth was born in 1802 in North Shields, died on 7 May 1870 in Marsden, Co.Durham aged 68, and was buried in Whitburn Parish Church. They had eight children: Jane, William, Thomas Colley, Peter, Elizabeth Marsden, John George, Archibald and Mary-Ann. General Notes: Elizabeth assisted her husband Peter in the Grotto making tea and cakesfor the visitors. After Peter died she continued working at the Grottoand on 1851 census she describes herself as a Publican. On 1861 censusshe describes herself as a Licensed Victualler. Noted events in her life were: Baptism: : Whitburn Parish Churchyard. Jane ALLAN [89] was born about Jun 1824 in Whitburn, Co.Durham and was christened on 4 Jul 1824 in Whitburn. General Notes: Clockmaker William ALLAN [90] was born about 1827 in Whitburn, Co.Durham, died about 1873 in Whitburn, Co.Durham aged about 46, and was buried in Whitburn Parish Church. General Notes: Assisted with the excavation of Marsden Grotto and continued to make additions and improvements. On 1861 census he was still living at the Grotto with his mother. He remained at the Grotto until his death at the age of 46 and is buried with his parents Peter and Elizabeth. Was there something wrong with William ie was he retarded or had he an illness. Was still single at 23 as 1851 census. Peter ALLAN [92] was born about Mar 1830 and was christened on 11 Apr 1830 in Whitburn.
