Reds Unanimous Choice As No. 1 in Hockey Rankings

PHOTO: JAMES WEST/FOR UNB ATHLETICS The University of New Brunswick Reds are the unanimous choice as No. 1 men’s hockey team in the land. The Reds, 17-0-3 atop the Atlantic University Sport conference, received all 14 first-place votes from the media panel and were also the top-ranked team in the ELO Ratings, which measures strength of opponent. UNB earned 280 points in all. The reigning national champion Alberta Golden Bears and Canada West-rival Saskatchewan Huskies remain second and third with 247 and 211 points, respectively, followed by the Ottawa Gee-Gees with 205. The Brock Badgers (156) climb from seventh to fifth and the Carleton Ravens (110) from ninth to sixth. The Queen’s Gaels (95) slipped from fifth to seventh. 9 janvier 2019 – Telegraph Journal The Saint Mary’s Huskies, who fell 3-1 to UNB before pounding the UPEI Panthers 9-2, stay in eighth with 94 points - although they garnered the fifth-most media votes with 66. The Calgary Dinos and Western Mustangs round out the top 10. UPEI, Ryerson Rams, McGill Redmen and the Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleus received honourable mention. The Reds have five of the conference’s top nine pointgetters. Chris Clapperton has 10 goals and 18 assists for 28 points, tied at the top with Hunter Garlent (7-21-28) of Saint Mary’s. UNB’s Tyler Boland is third with 13-14-27, one point up on UPEI’s Kam Kielly (10-16-26) and Moncton rookie Max St- Cyr, who leads the country with 20 goals. Marc-Anthony Therrien of les Aigles Bleus sits sixth with 9- 16-25, followed by a trio of Reds. Stephen Anderson has 7-15-22 while Kris Bennett (8-13-21) and Matthew Boucher (7-14-21) are tied for eighth. Boucher has missed the last two games. Montreal tops the women’s hockey rankings again, but Alberta vaulted from fourth to second. McGill remains third, Manitoba drops from second to fourth and the St. Thomas University Tommies, on a 12-game winning streak, hold down the No. 5 spot for a second straight poll. Sixth-ranked Corcordia traded places with St. FX, now ranked seventh. Western, Guelph and Saskatchewan complete the top 10. UdeM’s Katryne Villeneuve is the top pointgetter in the AUS. She has 13-10-23 in 18 games. STU’s Lauren Henman, who missed four games with a separated shoulder, has 22 points, including 14 goals in 14 games. Tommies captain Emily Oleksuk is third with 9-12-21 while linemate Olivia Reid (5-14-19) and Riverview’s Sarah Bujold, 9 janvier 2019 – Telegraph Journal the St. FX captain, (11-8-19) are tied for fourth. The AUS doesn’t get much love in the basketball rankings. Saint Mary’s is fifth and Dalhousie eighth in the men’s poll topped by the Carleton Ravens. No AUS women’s hoop team cracks the top 10, although UPEI and Cape Breton are the only two schools to receive honourable mentions. Laval is the No. 1-ranked women’s team. .
