Hence, it is listed as Least Concern. Geographic Range Range Description: This species is endemic to the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Valley and adjacent Mixteca Alta in the Mexican States of Oaxaca and Puebla (Arias et al. 1997, Hunt et al. 2006). The population is stable thanks to the tolerance people have for the species. Carmona and Casas (2005) report significant phenotypic variation among wild, managed in-situ, and cultivated populations. Current Population Trend: Stable Habitat and Ecology (see Appendix for additional information) The species inhabits in xerophyllous scrub and commonly grows on alluvial limestone fans and shallow black soil. The species flowers between March and June, and produces fruits between June and August (Arias et al. 1997). Systems: Terrestrial Use and Trade (see Appendix for additional information) The fruits of this species are consumed fresh or in preserves, it is an important source of soft wood for pottery, and the stem is used as soap (Arias et al. 1997, Casas et al. 1997, Luna-Morales and Aguirre 2001). The species is tolerated and even promoted in agricultural lands. Threats The species has no threats. Conservation Actions (see Appendix for additional information) The species is distributed within the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Biosphere Reserve. Credits Assessor(s): Arias, S. & Zavala-Hurtado, A.
