Tom Hanks: A Tribute November 8-14 The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters Screening Schedule Toy Story. 1995. USA. Directed by John Lasseter. Screenplay by Joss Whedon, Andrew Stanton, Joel Cohen, Alec Sokolow. Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) is the toy that Andy plays with the most, but when he gets a Buzz Lightyear action figure for his birthday, Andy’s favorite becomes intensely jealous of the clueless spaceman. In the first completely computer-animated feature film, Lasseter and company created two utterly believable, computer-generated worlds—one real, one toy—in a timeless story of friendship and loyalty. 81 min. Tuesday, November 8, 4:30 p.m. T1 Saturday, November 12, 1:30 p.m. T2 Big. 1988. USA. Directed by Penny Marshall. With Tom Hanks, Elizabeth Perkins, Robert Loggia. Hanks proved his range—and nabbed his first Academy Award nomination—with the role of Josh Baskin, a 12- year-old whose wish to be a grown-up is granted by a haunted carnival game. As the “adult” Josh, Hanks mixes physical humor with genuine glimpses of the vulnerability of adolescence. The biggest success of Hanks’s career to that point, the film also made Penny Marshall the first woman director to surpass $100 million at the box office. Tuesday, November 8, 8:00 p.m. T1 Sunday, November 13, 2:30 p.m. T2 The ’Burbs. 1989. USA. Directed by Joe Dante. With Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher, Bruce Dern, Corey Feldman. Unlike fellow suburban fantasist Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante added satirical bite and Looney Tunes slapstick to tales of the uncanny in the American cul-de-sac—most notably in 1984’s monsters- on-Main-Street classic Gremlins. In The ’Burbs, Dante brings his macabre sensibility to the story of Ray Peterson (Hanks), who, along with the other goofballs living on Mayfield Place, investigates the apparent murder of another resident at the hands of some mysterious new neighbors. Hanks, in rare straight-man mode, anchors an ensemble that includes Carrie Fisher as Ray’s beleaguered wife and a terrific Bruce Dern as an unhinged former military man. Wednesday, November 9, 4:30 p.m. T1 Saturday, November 12, 7:30 p.m. T2 Joe Versus the Volcano. 1990. USA. Written and directed by John Patrick Shanley. With Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, Lloyd Bridges, Abe Vigoda. Every day Joe trudges to work at the oppressive American Panascope Corporation factory, where he is hounded by his abusive boss and seeks solace in fantasies about the pretty secretary who sits nearby. A committed hypochondriac, Joe is convinced the florescent lights above his desk are killing him. So when Joe’s doctor tells him he has a “brain cloud” and less than six months to live, he quits. Out of nowhere comes the eccentric Mr. Graynamore, who has designs on a tropical island rich in minerals beyond imagination. The only problem is that the island is inhabited by natives who demand a human sacrifice to their sacred volcano before mining can commence. What the heck, Joe is going to die anyway, so he signs on for one final adventure. 102 min. Thursday, November 10, 7:00 p.m. T2 Philadelphia. 1993. USA. Directed by Jonathan Demme. Screenplay by Ron Nyswaner. With Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, Antonio Banderas, Roberta Maxwell. In 1993, in the US alone there were more than 40,000 deaths linked to AIDS-related illnesses, yet Philadelphia was the first big Hollywood feature to deal with the epidemic. Tom Hanks, in his second Oscar-winning role, plays attorney Andrew Beckett, who works at a powerful and traditional Philadelphia law firm. When Andrew is diagnosed with AIDS, his anxious employers latch onto a convenient “error”—a missing document for a pending deal— to fire him. When no other firm will take on the wrongful dismissal suit against Andrew’s behemoth employer, he seeks out Joe Miller, the kind of lawyer who advertises on TV and bus benches. Miller is homophobic himself, but he immerses himself in Andrew’s case out of eventual moral outrage. 125 min. Friday, November 11, 4:30 p.m. T1 Saturday, November 12, 5:00 p.m. T1 Bachelor Party. 1984. USA. Directed by Neal Israel. With Tom Hanks, Adrian Zmed, Tawny Kitaen. Thanks to the one-two punch of Splash and Bachelor Party, 1984 was the year Tom Hanks went from beloved TV comic to bona-fide movie star. Bachelor Party has at its core a rousing clarion call: “Let’s have a bachelor party, with chicks, and guns, and fire trucks, and hookers, and drugs, and booze!” Unsurprisingly, it also features all the hallmarks of raunchy 1980s comedy: rampant cocaine abuse, casual homophobia, adolescent sexuality, and animal hijinks both literal and figurative. Yet Hanks, in a breakout performance of effortless, magnetic affability, singlehandedly elevates the proceedings to “genre classic” status. 105 min. Sunday, November 13, 5:30 p.m. T1 A League of Their Own. 1992. USA. Directed by Penny Marshall. Screenplay by Lowell Ganz, Babaloo Mandel, based on a story by Kim Wilson, Kelly Candaele. With Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Madonna. During WWII, a lack of male workers led many US industries to hire women, including sports leagues. The establishment of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in 1943 was a bid to keep pro baseball alive until the war ended and their dedicated fans and players returned. This comedy/drama follows coach Jimmy Duggan (Hanks) as he struggles to develop a team. He has the ace sisters Dottie and Kit, but neither truly believes in her innate talents; Dottie is waiting for her husband to come home and Kit is afraid of her own shadow. Duggan, a heavy drinker whose bad habits got him thrown out of the majors, morphs from a bully to a big-hearted champion of his female players. The film reunited Hanks with Big director Penny Marshall, who creates a visually authentic wartime America and captures the quietly changing role of women as they stepped out of the kitchen and into the larger world. Added to The Library of Congress National Film Registry in 2012. 128 min. Monday, November 14, 4:00 p.m. T2 .
