David Payne has given over 60 years of continuous service to the Old Elizabethans Cricket Club. He joined the club as a player in August 1950 and eventually became club captain. After his playing career he has been a very successful junior team manager, club and league umpire, Club Chairman for several years, Treasurer for 27 years and volunteer on the ground work party for numerous years, keeping the perimeters of both grounds in excellent condition throughout the year. David has dedicated his life to the Old Elizabethans Cricket Club, but he has never been one to seek glory or reward for what he has given to the club. The Old Elizabethans Cricket Club is delighted David’s dedication has been rewarded and that others can be aware of their unsung hero. Chance to Shine The Cricket Foundation has reviewed the Chance to Shine programme and engaged a consultation process with county cricket boards, school sports partnerships, county sports partnerships and the ECB. The results of the review were to focus on quality outcomes rather than quantity of delivery. This is broken into 4 outcomes: 1. Participation – Minimum of 6 weeks engagement within schools 2. Competition – 5 inter and 5 intra matches per school 3. Migration – Provide an opportunity for every participant to join a club 4. Engagement and Sustainability – Teacher training provided, assembly visit for each school, national cricket day activities Funding for Chance to Shine is aligning to the ECB indicative score (1.44%) for that board, this has resulted in a reduction in funding of £16K per year for WCB; the funding constraints are 80% for delivery and 20% as PRFP. The changes have enabled County Cricket Boards to have more control on where and what is delivered. The WCB have been in consultation with Chance to Shine, other Cricket Boards and school sports partnerships to design a template for delivery. A 6 week model of delivery which incorporates introductory club sessions, competition and school engagement has been created in order to achieve all required outcomes. We are in the process of identifying clubs and schools that will take part in the programme for 2012. - 2 - “Worcestershire Cricket – Pushing the boundaries and creating opportunities” CLUB CRICKET (JUNIOR) WYC News The trials are currently under way and will continue throughout November and December. We have had good numbers nominated again throughout all of the age groups. The WYC is working hard through its Executive group to improve our programmes in 2012 and beyond. The coaches were invited along to Malvern College where Worcestershire County Cricket Club Coaches Steve Rhodes, Damian D’Oliveira, Ben Smith, Matt Mason and Ross Dewar put on an education seminar which was hugely beneficial and well received by our WYC and District coaches, so thanks to WCCC for that. Ben Smith is working with our under 17s and Matt Mason with the under 16s for the whole of the 2012 programme. Steve Mcewan Ex WCCC is also helping with the under 16s. Paul Husbands 15s, Olly Taylor and Paul Clarke 11s are also additions to our coaching staff for 2012. Ken Webster has stepped down this year from the under 14s to take on a role with the North District under 15s; our thanks go to him for all the work he has done for WYC over the years. Richard Wood our Chairman is also stepping down at the AGM in December. Richard has been responsible for moving WYC forward enormously in this his second time in the role. This has included amongst many things, a new constitution, the formation of the executive, many fundraising activities to improve our programmes and a review of all policies. Tremendous thanks must go to Richard for the work he has done for WYC. The WYC dinner went well again with a sell out in the Graeme Hick pavilion. The prize winners for the WYC age groups were: Players Player Managers Player 11s Arjun Uppal Matthew Davies 12s Josh Haynes Josh Haynes 13s Nick Hammond Tom Wickstead 14s Oliver Westbury Freddie Wynn 15s Darrel Williams Dan Goodyear 16s Zac Turley Connor Smith 17s Ryan Brown Alasdair Pollock - 3 - “Worcestershire Cricket – Pushing the boundaries and creating opportunities” CLUB CRICKET (JUNIOR) There were also a number of good performances. 100s were scored by: 5 wicket balls by: Mahaz Ahmed under Liam Smith under 14s Josh Haynes under George Galla Under 15s Oliver Westbury Under Darell Williams 15s Connor Smith Alasdair Pollock 16s Olly Butts Zac Turley Under Michael Hingley Ollie Steele Tom Kohle-Cadmore under District The District trials are also ongoing through November and December; squads will be selected for a comprehensive indoor programme starting in January. The credit for this must go to the clubs who are developing the boys well before they come onto the district programme. We are hoping that all information will be out regarding the selection for the trial by the end of December. Once again thanks to the Dudley Building Society for their sponsorship and to the Sport and Physical activity section of the local authority in Dudley who support us financially to enable us to run the programmes that we do. East District Following a successful summer programme the 3 district age groups attended the Presentation evening held in the marquee for the 11’s and 12s and in the Graeme Hick pavilion for the 13’s at New Road. This was an opportunity to recognise good performances with lads receiving certificates for 50 runs, 100 runs or a four wicket haul. Trials have begun for the 2012 season with a higher number of nominations being made than previous years, thanks to all coaches and schools that nominated as this can only provide us with stronger teams. - 5 - “Worcestershire Cricket – Pushing the boundaries and creating opportunities” CLUB CRICKET (JUNIOR) West District The 2012 season is nearly up on us; trials have now taken place at Kings School for the under 11s, 12s and 13s, with 67 boys trialling across the 3 age groups. It was very pleasing to see some high standards at trials, it has been a difficult decision selecting squads of 16 and 14 for the under 13s. 23 of these boys have also been selected to attend various County age group trials – good luck to all! The West has a full and intense 10 week indoor programme which will commence in January at Kings School. Also this season for the first time the West will be running an under 15s and trials and this will take place end of January.
