FIRST AID MEASURES 4.1 Description of first aid measures Following inhalation Remove from contaminated area, lay patient down, keep warm and rested. Obtain medical attention. In case of skin contact Wash with plenty of water and soap. If irritation occurs, continues and/or worsens, stop using the product, consult a physician. In case of eye contact Wash out immediately with fresh running water for several minutes. Ensure complete irrigation of the eye by keeping eyelids apart and away from eye and moving the eyelids by occasionally lifting the upper and lower lids, seek medical attention if irritation occurs. If swallowed Do not induce vomiting, if the person is conscious, wash out mouth thoroughly with water. Immediately make victim drink water (two glasses at most). Never give anything to a person showing signs of being sleepy or with reduced awareness; i.e. becoming unconscious. Obtain medical attention. 4.2 Most important symptoms and effects, both acute and delayed Inhalation May be harmful when inhaled, may cause irritation of the respiratory tract. Ethanol [CAS# 64-17-5]: At concentrations above 50% may cause local mucosal wounds due to dehydration and precipitation of albumin. Rhinitis (nasal membrane inflammation) may occur. Cough, headache, fatigue may be seen. Skin No adverse effects expected. Repeated or prolonged exposure to ethanol may cause skin irritation and dermatitis, due to degreasing properties of the substance. Eyes Causes serious eye irritation. Burning sensation, increased lacrimation and redness may be seen. Ingestion May be harmful if swallowed. May cause irritation in the gastrointestinal tract. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea may also be seen. 4.3 Indication of any immediate medical attention and special treatment needed Central nervous system depression, narcosis, nausea, vomiting may be seen when swallowed. Thoroughly observe the patient and treat symptomatically. 5. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES 6.1 Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures 6.1.1 For non-emergency personnel Ensure adequate ventilation, avoid inhalation of vapors/fumes and contact with eyes. Remove all sources of ignition. Prevent further leakage or spillage if safe to do so, keep away from incompatible products. Evacuate the area. 6.1.2 For emergency responders Evacuate personnel to safe areas. Remove all sources of ignition. Ensure adequate ventilation, avoid inhalation of vapors/fumes and contact with eyes. Consider exposure limits and use personal protective equipment referred in Section 8. 6.2 Environmental precautions Try to prevent the material from entering drains or water courses. Spillages or uncontrolled discharges into watercourses must be alerted to the Environmental Agency or other appropriate regulatory body. 6.3 Methods and materials for containment and cleaning up Remove with an inert non-combustible absorbent (like vermiculite, sand, cat litter) and dispose of absorbent as hazardous waste. Wash the contaminated surface with water. Dispose of waste material according to local, state and federal regulations. 6.4 Reference to other sections See Section 7 for safe handling. HANDLING AND STORAGE 7.1 Precautions for safe handling Use ex-proof equipment when handling. Ethanol vapors may form explosive mixtures with air (Lower Explosion Limit 3,1% v/v, Upper Explosion Limit 27,7% v/v), do not work in confined spaces and fume hoods with unknown performance. The product is flammable; do not spray directly on fire or hot surfaces. Handle in accordance with the general rules of occupational hygiene and safety. Avoid inhalation of vapours, wear protective clothing when risk of exposure occurs, ensure adequate ventilation. Do not eat, drink or smoke in areas where the material is used, wash thoroughly after handling the material. Remove contaminated clothing and protective equipment before entering eating areas. Protect from heat, flames and sparks, extremes of temperature and direct sunlight. Store away from food, drink and animal feeding stuffs and foodstuff containers. Containers which are opened must be carefully resealed and kept upright to prevent leakage.
