Let’s talk about GRADES... Why do grades matter? 1. Each grade contributes to your overall Grade Point Average (GPA) a. This determines eligibility for sports & activities (minimum 2.00) 2. Grades tell us how you are doing and if you are understanding the curriculum How do I remain eligible for athletics? ■ Eligibility is recalculated each 6-week grading period. To participate in sports & theater performances, 9th to 11th graders must: ■ Pass at least 25 credits with a minimum 2.0 GPA during previous grading period ■ Have no more than one F ■ Student athletes must submit Athletic Packet to Health Office BEFORE trying out What happens if I fail a class? ■ You'll need to repeat the class to be eligible for graduation AND college ■ You can repeat the class in summer school or at Mills during the school year ■ If you fail more than 3 classes, you will become "credit deficient." You must meet with your counselor to develop a plan for graduation. What happens if I get a “D” in a required course? To be eligible for a 4-year college, the course has to be repeated! Plan to discuss with your counselor. What can I do if I’m struggling in a class? ✓ Talk to the teacher… get help during Flex Time! ✓ Check assignments in Canvas regularly ✓ Attend free After-School Tutoring ○ Mondays-Thursdays in the library 3:30-5pm ✓ Buddy up with a classmate who is doing well ✓ Speak with your counselor ✓ Free online tutoring service through public library Let’s take a Breather! Planning for Next Year Electives with Requirements Classes that require an application: ➔ Leadership: To apply, talk to Ms. Dove (Rm. 136 or 152). ◆ Sign up for another elective first. We will add students who have been approved. ➔ Journalism: Pick up an application from Mr. Hensley (Rm. 116) Recommended: 1st Period Off! Research shows that a later start time: ● Increases how much sleep students get (since adolescent sleep cycles run later than adults) ● Improves students’ mood and mental health ● Improves students’ grades and standardized test scores Just select 1st period off on your course request form! Requesting 7th period off ➔ Only athletes can request 7th period off, and it is not guaranteed. ➔ If you plan to play a sport and want 7th off, you must list your sport on your course request worksheet! Summer School ● SMUHSD summer school is to remediate D’s or F’s ● Counselors will assist students signing up in March during scheduling. ● Burlingame High School will host summer school ● Transportation is provided if needed ● Summer School Dates: ○ Sessions #1 : June 8 to 23 ○ Session #2 June 24 to July 9 ○ Mon - Fri from 8:30 a.m. -12:50 p.m. Tuition-free courses can also be taken at the community college – Pick up a Concurrent Enrollment Form in the Career Center Summer Opportunities ● Summer is a great time to try something new and enriching! ○ Get an internship or job ○ Volunteer ○ Take a community college course ○ Attend a STEM Camp or research experience ● Deadlines for summer internships happening now! ○ Check out these Summer Internships - listed on our website under Mills Counseling -> College & Career ● Questions?
