We continue to be vigilant in researching and adding information that previously was omitted, in error, szor incomplete. Media, coaches and fans can helped by sending additional corrections or information to Bud Legg at the IHSAA; PO Box 10, Boone, IA 50036-0010 or e-mailing him at [email protected]. Iowa’s high school baseball legacy is proud and extensive. It includes the Spring State Tournament from 1928 through 1972; the Fall Championships from 1939 to 1985, and the Summer State Championships since 1946. The longevity, the number of participants, and the level of play, coaching and umpiring constitutes a remarkable testimonial to all those who have made high school baseball “prime time.” From 1946 through 2011 we have crowned 167 State Summer Champions. A total of 115 coaches have directed teams to State Titles. Just as impressively 474 coaches have directed teams to the tournament with 289 of our schools having appeared in the summer tourney at least once. Twenty-two of those schools are no longer open but their baseball connection has been preserved through mergers/consolidations or sharing programs with other member schools. Relatively speaking over 70% of the 374 schools playing baseball this summer have a “state tournament connection.” An updated All-Time Best List can be found on our websiite -- www.iahsaa.org then click on “Baseball” and scroll down. The website list is updated as we receive information. We are indebted to those members of the media and coaches who have validated each of the performances listed. We consider the list as a work in progress and hopefully can be develop further in the future. Most of the entries are from 1970 to the present. As information from previous years becomes available and documented it will be added. The compilation of the list has been a daunting task especially since it was constructed from scratch. All-time performances have not always been vogue or in demand. However, it has been the philosophy of the IHSAA for over 100 years that student-athletes and their programs are important. We view the work we do for those students who participate in those programs , as a vital component of the rich heritage of high school athletics in Iowa. As you read the information presented, please feel free to contact us, if you feel there is an error. We are especially concerend about correct spellings and we will remain diligent in “getting it right.” Bud Legg April 14, 2011 [3] SUMMER CHAMPIONS The IHSAA was the first State Association in the nation to hold a baseball championship meet in the summer.
