114th Met Amateur Championship Country Club of Fairfield Fairfield, Conn. August 4-7, 2016 MET AMATEUR History of the Met Amateur The Met Amateur, the MGA’s oldest championship, was played for the first time in 1899 at Garden City Golf Club and quickly became the country’s most distinguished regional amateur championship. The longevity of the “Met Am” is rivaled in this country only by the U.S. Amateur and Western Amateur. The original championship plate was donated by H.B. Hollins, with the condition that it be retired after three victories by representatives of the same club, a feat accomplished for Nassau Country Club by Findlay Douglas (two wins) and Jerry Travers. The subsequent trophy was a gift of then-MGA president Daniel Chauncey. The Met Amateur immediately set a lofty precedent for quality. Its first two winners, Herbert Harriman (1899) and Walter Travis (1900), also were that year’s U.S. Amateur champions. Two early rivalries — first between Travis and Douglas, then Travis and Travers — garnered national attention. In subsequent years the Met Amateur has been won by the likes of Jess Sweetser, Willie Turnesa, Ray Billows, Robert Gardner, Dick Siderowf, Frank Strafaci, George Zahringer III, Johnson Wagner, and Jerry Courville Sr. and Jr. — all top names in the history of amateur golf. Three Met Amateur champions, Zahringer III, Courville Jr. and Ken Bakst, have also won the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship. The Met Amateur has always been played at match play, with only slight format changes over the years. It remains the Met Area’s most important amateur event — a demanding, sometimes grueling test of championship golf with the victor surviving multiple days of 36-hole competition. Eligibility The competition is open to amateur golfers who are members of an MGA Member Club. A person who does not reside in the MGA territory, and who is not a full-time student or employed in the MGA territory, cannot join an MGA Member Club for the purpose of entering the Met Amateur Championship. All entrants must have a current USGA Handicap Index not to exceed 5.0 under the Men’s USGA Handicap System and are subject to the MGA Rules and Regulations. Format of Play 18-hole sectional qualifying. Qualifiers then play 36 holes of on-site qualifying to determine the 16 players who advance to match play. Championship Schedule Thursday, August 4 . .36-hole stroke play qualifying to determine 16 match play qualifiers Friday, August 5 . .Round of 16 and quarterfinals Saturday, August 6 . .Semifinals Sunday, August 7 . .36-hole final MET AMATEUR Final Field Past Champions are denoted in bold. Seth Raynor was enlisted to build the golf course, and construction began in 1916. It took five years to complete the course due to the challenge of the site and the country’s involvement in World War I. A links-style course, Fairfield is sprinkled with wet- lands, ponds, and sea grass. There are five par 3s, three of Founded: which cross water hazards, while another is a sparkling 1914 Course Opened: Redan, situated between the clubhouse and the beach. The 1920 present clubhouse, situated on the highest point on the Architect: property, was built in 1960 after a fire leveled the previous Seth Raynor building. Course Rating:71 The Country Club of Fairfield has hosted the 2008 Met Slope: 132 Open, won by Mark Mielke, and the 2012 MGA Senior Masters Tournament, won by Bob Howe. MET AMATEUR 113th Met Amateur Championship Baltusrol Golf Club, Springfield, N.J. Thursday-Sunday, July 30-August 2 Peter Kim, a 20-year-old cadet at West Point, defeated Ryan Snouffer 1-up. After the morning round, Kim contin- ued his close battle with Snouffer despite the pain of tendonitis in his ankle. Walking from shot to shot with a noticeable limp, he still maintained his lead and Kim closed out the match on the 36th hole after a grueling four days to claim his second MGA win. ~Final~ Peter Kim, Royce Brook def.
