He is in charge of the military health service, directs the medical sector in the Armed Forces Staff and is head of the Centre of Competence for Military and Disaster Medicine. In addition the Surgeon Gen- eral supervises the Aeromedical Institute and medical support of the professional special forces. Or- ganisationally, he is assigned to the Chief of Armed Forces Staff. In his function as Commissioner of the Federal Council of Ministers he is responsible for coordinating preparations and the deployment of Swiss public health resources in special and exceptional situa- tions and is authorised to negotiate directly with both civilian and military authorities of Confederation and cantons.
