ILLINI GOLF CLASSIC // 2 ILLINI GOLF CLASSIC // 3 FROM THE DESK OF HEAD COACH MIKE SMALL In my 21 years as the head golf coach at the University of Illinois, the landscape of college golf and our program has changed immensely. One thing that has stayed the same though is this program’s incredible support from alumni, fans and donors. As we approach the 19th Annual Illini Golf Classic hosted by Illini Tour Professionals, I can’t stress enough how grateful we are for your support and commitment to making the Illini Golf Classic a great success. Through your participation, sponsorship and auction involvement, our golf team has been afforded the opportunity to play and compete on some of the best courses and against some of the top teams in the country. Coming up this season, our squad will be tested on premier courses such as Olympia Fields, the Blessings, Isleworth, Southern Highlands and Rich Harvest Farms. This outing also helps the success of our team by outfitting our first-class Demirjian Indoor and Lauritsen/Wohlers Outdoor Golf Practice Facilities with premier equipment and training aids. The Illini Golf Classic is unique because of the loyalty that Illini touring professionals have towards the event, and their desire to come back to support their program, while also spending time with the many Illini friends that have followed their careers. Illini greats Steve Stricker, D.A. Points, Scott Langley, Luke Guthrie, Thomas Pieters, Brian Campbell, Thomas Detry, Nick Hardy and Dylan Meyer have all become household names on the PGA, Korn Ferry and European Tours and have graciously donated their time and effort to our event. It is also exciting to see graduates Charlie Danielson, Bryan Baumgarten, Giovanni Tadiotto and Michael Feagles competing professionally. We appreciate their continued faithfulness and support to our program and University! We encourage you to please mark your calendar and plan on attending the 19th Annual Illini Golf Classic hosted by Illini Tour Professionals. Invite your friends, family, clients and employees to join in this year’s festivities. We want to continue to make this a special occasion and with your participation, we can have a great time celebrating Illini Golf together and making the 2021 Illini Golf Classic another one to remember. Best Wishes, Mike Small Men’s Golf Coach LF GO CL I A N S I S L I C L I ILLINI GOLF CLASSIC // 3 A LOOK AT THE 2020-21 SEASON ILLINOIS MEN’S GOLF TEAM Following the cancellation of the 2019-20 postseason, and the ensuing 11-month layoff from team competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic, head coach Mike Small and Fighting Illini men’s golfers persevered to work their way back into familiar territory at the top of the Big Ten Conference and competing for a national championship in 2021. When it was all said and done, the Fighting Illini closed out the year with the program’s sixth-consecutive Big Ten Championship before advancing to NCAA Regional and ultimately qualifying for the team’s 13th-straight NCAA Championship appearance. Illinois has now advanced to the NCAA Championship in 16 of head coach Mike Small’s 21 seasons, and the program’s 13 appearances in a row mark the second-longest active streak in the nation. The Fighting Illini returned to competitive stroke-play events in February 2021, and the Orange and Blue picked up right where they left off, storming out of the gate with three consecutive victories to open the schedule. Illinois’ run began with a 17-stroke victory at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate (Feb. 14-16). The Illini’s second win came against a loaded field of SEC competition at the LSU Invitational (Feb. 26-28). March began with Illinois’ third-consecutive team win of the year, a 38-stroke victory with a tournament-record team score of 823 (-41) at the Louisiana Classics (March 15-16). Over the next three outings, the Illini tied for fifth at the National Invitational Tournament (March 20-21), placed fourth at the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational (April 3-4), and placed second at the Boilermaker Invitational (April 10-11). The Illini closed the regular season with their fourth win at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate (April 24-25), before capturing the 2021 Big Ten Championship (April 30-May 2) to give the team five victories on the year. In addition to the team’s five tournament titles, Illinois finished in fifth or better in all 10 team events played in 2021. The Illini’s Big Ten Championship, the 18th overall in program history, came in thrilling fashion as the Orange and Blue rallied down the stretch to secure the one-stroke victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes. The win marked the 11th Big Ten title in the last 12 postseasons for the Illini, matching Ohio State’s stretch of 11 titles in 12 years from 1976-87 as the most dominant in Big Ten history. Illinois’ strong play continued into the NCAA Stillwater Regional where they notched a runner-up finish behind host Oklahoma State at the always challenging Karsten Creek Golf Club. Not only did the Illini advance past the NCAA Regionals to qualify for the NCAA Championship at the Grayhawk Golf Club Raptor Course in Scottsdale, Ariz., but they once again finished the year among the final eight programs competing for the national title by making the cut to the match play portion of the event to secure a share of fifth place in the finals. Several Illini were recognized by the Big Ten following the league championships, highlighted by junior Adrien Dumont de Chassart being named Co-Big Ten Player of the Year to take home the program’s 12th such honor. Dumont de Chassart was joined on the All-Big Ten first team by fifth-year senior Michael Feagles (who won an unprecedented fifth first-team all-conference honor) and sophomore Jerry Ji.
