This is a milestone in Ballet Arizona’s history, having its last full length ballet premiere being Ib Andersen’s The Nutcracker in 2006. The Firebird will usher this company into a new era and add to its extensive repertoire. The Firebird ballet has a long and rich history spanning nearly a century. The original production was conceived in 1910 by Sergei Diaghilev, Michel Fokine, and Igor Stravinsky for the Ballets Russes. Its obscurity and popularity has led to numerous productions and reproductions of the ballet throughout the years. In Ib Andersen’s post 21st century version of The Firebird, the main characters will still be present, but the story will unfold in a futuristic setting with a space- age narrative. Featuring celestials, warrior princesses, and alien monsters, Ib’s The Firebird re-envisions the old-world magic of the original story and presents it in a thrilling and cinematic experience with a 90 foot wide by 28 foot tall screen that will act as the ballet’s backdrop and scenery. CHOREOGRAPHY: Ib Andersen, Artistic Director, Ballet Arizona MUSIC: Igor Stravinsky Hazel Hare was a strong, dedicated woman with a deep passion for the ballet. A generous supporter LIGHTING AND since 1996, Hazel arranged to make a transformational SCENIC/SET DESIGN: gift to Ballet Arizona through her estate, the Hazel Michael Korsch A.S. Hare Charitable Trust, establishing an endowment COSTUME DESIGN: of more than $4 million. As the largest single gift in Fabio Toblini Ballet Arizona’s history, the endowment will help to permanently fund the artistry she so deeply loved. In recognition of the ongoing nature of Hazel’s gift, Ballet Arizona has established the Hazel A.S. Hare Award of Artistic Excellence. It is awarded to a male and female dancer whose spirit echoes the strength, dedication and passion that Hazel exemplified throughout her life. 2018 RECIPIENTS: Jillian Barrell & Ethan Price Photo by Tim Fuller with sketching by Fabio Toblini.
