It was performed by the rock band Survivor and written by Frankie Sullivan and Jim Peterik. Listen to the original version of Eye of the Tiger and answer these questions: 1. Do you like the song? 2. What instruments can you hear? 3. What is the message of the song? How does this link to the name of the band? 4. Listen to the singer, Dave Bickler. Think about how he is performing the song. How does this reflect the message of the song? 5. Listen to the electric guitars at the start. One is playing a repeated rhythmic pattern on the same note and the other is playing a very famous riff. Why do you think the riff became so famous? Why is it so memorable? 6. The song is about survival and rising up to the challenges we have to face. Why do you think the songwriters have used a tiger to represent this? 7. The genre of this song is Rock. What do you think are the main features of this style of music? 8. Can you think of any other title songs to films that have become famous? Eye of the Tiger – Did you know? Eye of the Tiger stands out for its use of the electric guitar. Many bands have more than one person playing the guitar. This is because the guitar can either play a rhythm or lead part. The rhythm guitar plays chords and, along with the other instruments in rhythm section (piano, bass, drums) ,helps drive the groove of the song. The lead guitar is one of the solo parts that, along with the vocals and lead piano, add melody to the song. Lead guitars often play memorable riffs (a repeated phrase) like at the start of this song. Can you think of any other famous riffs? .
