Vice President Kevin W. Kearns The fi rst time I saw MD at a shopping mall Associate Publisher Tracy A. Kearns bookstore in the early 2000s, I remember thinking, Wait, someone makes a magazine Advertising Director Bob Berenson for US? I felt excited and grateful; many Advertising Assistant LaShanda Gibson of you likely felt that same elation after Senior Art Director Scott G. Bienstock picking up your own fi rst copy. Editorial Director Adam J. Budofsky It wasn’t long after discovering MD Hill Dave that I became aware of this month’s Managing Editor Michael Dawson cover artist, Mark Schulman. It was in the Ask a Pro column of the March Associate Editor Willie Rose 2003 issue. Schulman was performing with the pop icon Cher then, and Editor at Large Billy Amendola he was asked by a reader about his ability to achieve diff erent drum tones at the kit without having to change setups. Mark’s response was clearly THE MD PRO PANEL/ADVISORY BOARD: Chris Adler, Kenny Aronoff, Eddie worded, enthusiastic, thorough, and informative. In addition, his advice on Bayers, Gregg Bissonette, Jason Bittner, Bill Bruford, Will Calhoun, Terri Lyne technique, phrasing, and tuning still holds up. Carrington, Matt Chamberlain, Jeff Davis, Peter Erskine, Daniel Glass, Benny Schulman’s 2003 response feels particularly profound today due to the Greb, Matt Halpern, Horacio Hernandez, Gerald Heyward, Taku Hirano, Susie Ibarra, Jim Keltner, Paul Leim, Peter Magadini, George Marsh, Pat Mastelotto, amount of eff ort he put into answering that one question. His reply fi lled Allison Miller, Rod Morgenstein, Andy Newmark, Stephen Perkins, Dafnis an entire page, and not a word was wasted. In the time since that piece was Prieto, Rich Redmond, Brian Reitzell, Jim Riley, Antonio Sanchez, Gil Sharone, published, Mark’s lost none of that passion for informing drummers. For Chad Smith, Steve Smith, Todd Sucherman, Billy Ward, Kenny proof all you need to do is read this month’s cover feature, which includes Washington, Dave Weckl, Paul Wertico extended coverage on his journey and methods.
