Horseshoe Canyon , oJ~ma L 1 on are e::-:posed at i~n bert a. The channels are isolated lenticular bodies and are separated by abundant fine- grained sediment. One channel appears to be filled to the top with sand and contains large~ concave upward s u rfaces. The othei'.. channels contain well defined lateral accretion surfaces and large scale trough cross-bedding. Associated with the channel sands are levee, crevasse splay and distal overbaGk These channel~ are interpreted as high sinuosit~. Grain siz e distr i bution plots for the sandstones commonly lack a coarse population of grains transported by traction. F l ow calcuation s show that the channels were competent to move grain sizes much lar ger than those present within the channels . This leads to the conclusion that the characteristics of the traction population were strongly dependant on the s u pply of coarse material. veloc ities in the channels were calulated to ranqe from ~ . 1 ·····1 em s. The proposeed me~hanism for the sand fi l lino of a meander ing channel is th r ough gradual cutof+. Maintenance of flow conditions, capable ot :i i i transporting sand, due to the decrease of depth ~ith discharge, a l lowed the continued deposition o f ~and within the channel. Evidence of scoured surfaces within the channel indicate that any fines that may have been deposited were eroded away during flood stages when the meander loop was reoccupied. iv I would like to thank Dr. R.G. The channe l f ill s when it is either abandoned by the stream or ~ n de r ~o es a gradual decrease in flow due to reduction of deptn and slope; the fill usually consists of a plug of f ine material . In the case of abandonment. as in chute or neck cuto + +s, the abandonded meander loop is fil l ed by a plug o f fi nes introduced by overbank from the active portion o f t he st.recun. In the case of gradual flaw reduction , compet ence gradually decreases , resulting in the deposition o f f ines as ch.:mnel ·f i 11. In contrast to meandering s y stems , braided channels fill to the toe with sand b y v ertical a ccret i on a n d d o not contain a clay p l ug. Braided channel dep osi ts consist of laterally extensive sheets o ·f sand and are not confined by clay plugs . The sand filled c h ann el and the other paleochannels in the a r ea c onsist o f isolated, lenticular sand bodies surrounded by abundant, fine-grained sed ime n t. The sand body geometry more c losel y resembles deposits of a meandering channel d eposi t , therefore creating the problem of how meandering chan nel s c an fill to the tap with sand. The purpose of this study is to prooose p ossible explanations f or the sand filling of the channel . Field work in t his study included measuri ng sect ion s through the three channel outcrops, and paleocurrent determi nat1on and petrograph y a s we l l a s a n a~~ emp t a~ paleo-reconstruction of the channel (s). Excellent a n d c ontinuous exposures of flat-lying clastic rocks of Upper Cretace ous and Paleo g ene age are p r esent along the Red Deer River Valley of the central Albe rt a b adlands. The strata exposed along the v alley wa lls comprise the shallow marine Bearpaw Formation of the Campanian Stage, the deltaic and fluvial Edmon ton Group o+ the Campanian to Maestrichtian Stages and the continental Pas k apoo Formation . Due to the presence of a l most 100% outcrop, these exposures! especi a l l y the deltaic facies o f the lower Edmonton Group, are of interest because lateral facies relationships are easily studied. The study area is located less than 1 km north of Drumheller in an abandoned river valley that is now occupied by Highway 9 dig.
