DEPARTMENT OF CENSUS AND STATISTICS STATISTICAL ABSTRACT OF CEYLON 1960 V \ PRINTED AT THE GOVERNMENT PRESS, CEYLON TO BE PURCHASED AT THE GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS BUREAU. COLOMBO PREFACE THIS is the twelfth issue of the Statistical Abstract of Ceylon. The present volume is intended to continue the work of the previous issues in providing in one convenient volume important and comprehensive summary of statistics. The Tables presented in the last issue have been revised and brought up to date. Current monthly data for many of the Tables or series shown in this issue are to be found in the Quarterly Bulletins of Statistics issued by this Department. This Department wishes to express its gratitude to Government officers and members of private business institutions who have readily furnished most of the information published. The future issues of this publication will, as has been done in this issue, treat the subjects included still more comprehensively and will have their scope and coverage extended from time to time so as to include added information as they become available. With this end in view this Department will welcome sugges tions from all quarters and the undersigned will be glad to hear of any errors that may have passed unnoticed. N. MANICKA IDAIKKADAR, Department of Census and Statistics. Director of Census and Statistics. P. O. Box 563, Colombo, CEYLON, June 14, I960. «-—J. N. E 10666—1X60 (6/60) STATISTICAL ABSTRACT OF CEYLON I960 GENERAL NOTES 1. Area covered. All statistics relate to the Dominion of Ceylon. 2. Years covered. Except where it is stated to the contrary all statistics are for the calendar years ended 31 December. 3. Symbols employed. The following symbols have been used throughout the Abstract :' .. = not available — = nil or negligible 4. The series for certain data in a given table are not often immediately comparable. In some cases, a substantive change has occurred in a particular series, in others some of the figures have been compiled on a different base. In such cases attention is drawn by a horizontal line across the column ; in addition, a footnote indicates the nature of the difference. 5. Revisions. Some of the figures included in this Abstract are regarded by Departments as provisional only and may be revised subsequently. 6. Rounding of figures. Where necessary, each figure has been rounded off to the nearest final digit. For this reason there may be in some tables an apparent slight discrepancy between the sum of the constituent items and the total as shown. 7. Wherever information has not been given in respect of any parti cular Table it is because information was not available at the time of going to the press, or because the subject matter of this particular Table was under review.
