NEWSLETTER ISSUE 83 IN THIS ISSUE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SHAWWAL LET MISHKAH BE YOUR BRIDGE TO ARABIC AYAT OF THE WEEK THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SHAWWAL The Prophet (saw) said "Whoever fasts Ramadan, then follows it with six days (of fasting) of Shawwal, it is as if he fasted the entire year" (Muslim) Why is it like fasting a year? Allah multiplies the rewards of good deeds tenfold. A little math shows how small deeds become big deeds by Allah's grace: 1 month of Ramadan x 10 = 10 months 6 Days of Shawwal x 10 = 60 days (2 months) 10 + 2 = 12 months. Alhamdulillah! How does one fast these 6 days? These days do not have to be fasted right after Ramadan - you can start at any time in Shawwal except on the day of Eid. The fasts can be done during any six days of Shawwal after Eid - they do not have to be consecutive days. The fasts are not mandatory, but they are highly recommended - if you miss them, it's not a sin. Some scholars noted that you should make up any days you missed during Ramadan first then fast the six days. Others said it is permissible to fast them if you fear you will miss them, and then make up the ones for Ramadan later. After training ourselves through a month of fasting, engaging in these six extra days enables us to continue a good habit for the sake of Allah. There is still time to fast - let us take this opportunity to earn extra blessings and rewards during this month. May Allah keep us steadfast in seeking His pleasure.
