For additional information about contents of this document you may contact [email protected] Elisa Robles Director General of the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness Dear members of the Spanish Green Vehicles Community, It is a great honor for me to welcome you to the sixth Spanish Green Vehicles Cars annual con- ference. I am also very pleased to perceive the interest of the Spanish regions to host this event that it is becoming a key date to shape a challenging future ahead based on our R&D state of the art project results. Spain has a long tradition in automotive industry, nowadays Spain held on to 12th position at a world level and 2nd position at a European level in number of vehicle production. In 2013, more than 2 million of vehicles were manufactures and it is expected an increasing production to 2.4 million in 2014 and more than 3 million for the next years. These fi gures refl ect a promising future for this sector, that it is the third largest exporting sector in Spain, representing the 16% of the country´s entire exports and 10% of the GPD, either directly or indirectly. However, huge new markets are attracting production and the partnership between OEMs and suppliers is in a process of transformation where decision in research themes are a backbone to defi ne tomor- row’s winners that will build a new landscape. The European Commission, the Member States and other stakeholders made an important ef- fort to launch the new Horizon 2020 framework program that will permit the industry, SME, academia, technological centers and rest of R&D performers to exploit their technology excel- lence to design and manufacture new competitive products and solutions. The importance of collaborative R&D at European level is proven through new Horizon 2020 that increase and entails signifi cant lessons learnt from the previous framework. The Spanish entities also have very good R&D opportunities at national level perfectly compatible and aligned with the European priorities thanks the Spanish Strategy of Science, Technology and Innovation 2013-2020. Besides, aware of the importance of the collaboration in R&D with Euro- pean stakeholders, Spain has set the objective to obtain a challenging 9,5% of return in Horizon 2020. This high objective will lead Spanish participants to export and import knowledge that will boost Jobs, Growth and Investment in line with the new Junker´s Commission mandate I would like also to highlight the effort and good results that the Spanish stakeholders obtained in the previous FP7 Green Vehicles Public-Private Partnership. Spain obtained a return of 11 %. Underlying previous results, we see a powerful starting point to continue improving our results in the next Horizon 2020 Green Vehicles Public-Private Partnership. However, we cannot relax and we must be aware and struggle to build excellent project proposals and lead consortiums in Horizon 2020 if we want to continue to be a reference country for the automotive industry at international level. The Spanish government and its different ministries have supported the automotive industry and sector along the years, especially in this period of current global crisis. The PIVE or the 3 PIMA programs were launched in order to encourage the internal market with an enormous success in number of new vehicles sold. Also, Spain is pioneer in promoting and fostering green vehicles. MOVELE program (launched in 2011 by the Ministry of Industry Trade and Tourism) was the fi rst program designed to stimulate the purchase of electric cars and it has also been con- tinued by several regions of Spain. During the period 2009-2013 CDTI approved around 200 R&D projects related to automotive sector that represents more than 230 million of euros in investment and close to 160 million of euros in public loans or grants. We will continue providing our support to this important sector. Finally, let me encourage all the stakeholders to have lively and fruitful discussions that foster relationships with the objective of leading project consortiums and participating in the forth- coming calls. You can count with CDTI´s support to achieve the challenging objectives we have. 4 Francisco Conde López Regional Minister of Economy and Industry of the Galician Government Dear friends, This event H2020 Green Vehicles Spain 2014: Smart Strategy for the Transport of the Future is the response to a clear reality –the link between Galicia and its automobile industry- and to an immediate challenge –its innovative capacity in a global competitive environment-. This is the reason why forums like this one, that make possible to share experiences and ideas about how to face up future challenges, are being of such an importance. The car industry is a key sector in Galicia: it represents 14% of our GDP and it closed the 2013 with an income of 7,800 millions of Euros, almost 28% more than in the previous year. The fact that it counts with 19,000 workers that represent 19% of the national production, can give you an idea about how has grown the business sector in our region. The PSA Peugeot-Cotröen factory in Balaídos –the fi rst one of the French multinational at in- ternational level- is supported by a consolidated industry of components that, with more than 100 supplying companies, constitutes the biggest Galicin cluster. A cluster that has in the Gali- cian Automobile Technology Center an innovative vanguard of reference in Spain. These are the reasons why the Galician car sector is compelled to make a fundamental contri- bution to the Galician future, especially by means of its innovation map for the period between 2014 and 2020: the Galician Smart Specialization Strategy, or RIS3. Untill 2020 the RIS3 will free 1,600 millions of Euros for innovation projects with the aim of improving the competitiveness of the most important business industries, among them the automobile sector, by raising their technology capacity, diversifi cation, specialization and in- novation. One of the main challenges of the RIS3 is based precisely in the Industry heading towards Smart Factory supported by competitiveness and knowledge. In the case of automobile indus- try, this challenge goes through the capability of leading the transformations that the car in- dustry is undergoing at a global level, and, at the same time, of diversifying the auxiliary indus- try with the aim of fi nding new market niches and accessing high-tech sectors. The development of intelligent, eco-effi cient, sustainable and recyclable vehicles is, undoubt- edly, one of those great transformations, a challenge for our industry that can only be passed with a clear bet on Galician innovation. Together with the RIS3 we have to make good use of other European initiatives that allow to consolidate an innovative vanguard, such as Horizon 2020. Precisely, Galicia has established a very ambitious aims within this framework, that are four times higher than in the previous pro- gramme. To achieve this goal, we have to keep working at boosting and making easier Galician 5 participation in this programme and in all its initiatives. The European impetus to the automo- bile transformation by the H2020 Green Vehicles initiative is an important step on the road, in combination with the efforts to reach an effi cient use of clean technologies in road transport and improving our companies’ competitiveness.
