American Independence Day was an important date in the Chartist Calendar. CHARTISM mag in partnership with Shire Hall, Gwent Archives and 'Trails to Trials' Project present CHARTIST DAY at Shire Hall, Monmouth at 11.00 am - 1 pm Saturday 4th July 2015 FREE 175 years ago on this day, the Chartist convicts arrived at Port Arthur in Van Dieman's land (now Tasmania) Frost wrote to his wife 1840: "on morning, Saturday, the fourth of July, the ever memorable day, held in such esteem in the United States, we were landed at Port Arthur, the penal settlement for Van Diemen's Land". LECTURE 11am: Zephaniah Williams' Confession and the plight of the Chartist prisoners Les James (Editor: CHARTISM Mag) Found guilty of High Treason at Shire Hall, John Frost, Zephaniah Williams and William Jones were sentenced to death on January 16th 1840, but this punishment was commuted a fortnight later in response to public protest. This lecture explores the letter Zephaniah Williams wrote to the ship's doctor during the voyage and its impact on their plight in Van Diemens Land. In the letter, he admitted knowledge of a plan to seize towns in south Wales and start a revolution. WEBSITE DEMONSTRATION 12 noon: Sarah Daly (Cynefin Project Officer) is giving a preview of the 'transcription platform,' which is planned for launch in September. The Project has digitised the 25 Volumes of Chartist Trials documents at Newport Library. These have been uploaded and are being tagged to local tithe maps on the Cynefyn site. New volunteers are welcome for the next stage - transcribing the documents. This will done on-line, so there no geographical restrictions on who can take part.
