What Is a Pulsar Planet ? How Do Planets Form ?

Pulsar Planet - How do such systems form ? Exoplanet class, 2016/11/14 Astronomy, D1, 35-167078 What is a pulsar planet ? Miyu Masuyama pulsar • Planets orbiting around pulsars. • First detected extrasolar planets. • Three systems have been discovered since 1992 by using pulsar timing method. planet • ( PSR B1257+12, PSR B1620-26, PSR J1719-1438 ) Wolszczan & Frail (1992) [1] How do planets form ? • Several scenarios • There are some scenarios about formation of pulsar planets(tab. 1), • Pulsars are generated as result of supernovae explosions of massive stars. • However it is difficult to conclude because detected systems are only three. • When do planets form ? before explosions ? after explosions ? • Before explosion ? • Planet Capture • A massive star having planets explodes and becomes a pulsar with planets. Pulsar • Explosion energy is injected from supernovae to planets. If the star has a MS star jupiter-like planet, about 1046 erg is injected to the planet. This energy is Pulsar enough to strip the atmosphere from the planet. Therefore only a core without Planet atmosphere of pre-existing planets can survive in this scenario. Planet Supernova Planet MS star 0.1 RJ • Evolved from White Dwarf [4] 0.01 AU 2 π×(0.1RJ) Ein ~ ×1051 erg Eex ~ 1051 erg 4π×(0.01AU)2 Supernova ~1046 erg MS star • After explosion ? Pulsar • Protoplanetary disks are formed by using supernovae ejecta. • It has been observed that the magnetar 4U 0142+61 has a debris disk which is White Dwarf composed of heavier metals[3]. Pulsar • However, radiation from a pulsar to a surrounding disk is larger than other planetary systems(fig. 1)[5] and makes to form of planets difficult. Planet tab. 1 P.
