A Christmas Carol Character Guide EBENEZER SCROOGE What to know: He’s our main character - we follow his journey throughout the play. He owns an accounting firm, lives alone, and is generally thought of as mean and cheap. Triad Stage // Character Guide // triadstage.org // page 2 BEGGAR WOMAN & BEGGAR CHILDREN What to know: The Beggar Woman and the Beggar Children appear at the beginning of the play, and serve as narrators throughout the story. Scrooge pays him poorly and complains about letting him off of work for the holiday. CRATCHIT FAMILY What to know: Bob Cratchit’s large family includes his wife Mrs. Cratchit, his daughters Martha and Belinda, and his sons Peter, Edward, and Tiny Tim, who who has an unspecific illness and uses a crutch to walk. Mrs. Cratchit is angry at Scrooge for how he treats Bob. Triad Stage // Character Guide // triadstage.org // page 4 FRED What to know: Scrooge’s only nephew. Fred invites Scrooge to dinner every Christmas, but he always refuses. Fred, his young wife, and his friends joke about how mean and lonely Scrooge is. Triad Stage // Character Guide // triadstage.org // page 5 JACOB MARLEY What to know: Marley was Scrooge’s business partner, but he died several years ago. The chains he wears as a ghost are to repent for a life ill-spent. Triad Stage // Character Guide // triadstage.org // page 6 GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PAST What to know: The Ghost of Christmas Past takes Scrooge on a journey to visit his memories of Christmas. When she arrives, she rides in a winter sleigh and carries a staff. Triad Stage // Character Guide // triadstage.org // page 7 GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PRESENT What to know: The Ghost of Christmas Present takes Scrooge on a journey to visit people he knows, including Bob Cratchit and his nephew Fred. She is extremely tall and her dress is shaped like a Christmas tree. He appears as a child and shows Scrooge what his future will be if he doesn’t change his ways.
