Fall 2012 NEWSLETTER Iron Arrow Honor Society the HIGHEST HONOR ATTAINED at the UNIVERSITY of MIAMI

Fall 2012 NEWSLETTER Iron Arrow Honor Society THE HIGHEST HONOR ATTAINED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI A Message from the Chief Greetings Tribe Members! On behalf of the officers and myself, welcome to the start of another academic year. We hope that your summer has been relaxing and that you are ready to hit the ground running this fall! In the spirit of progress, we would like to begin this newsletter with a quote from Albert Einstein – “The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.” Semesters will come and go, new members will be initiated and may not come back for years, but our Tribe will always remain. The question is, “How much will we progress?” Recent changes in the Tribe have returned us to a mindset from our roots and have met the standards of a rapidly growing and 2012-2013 OFFICERS advancing University. The University of Miami has risen into the top tier of universities, now ranked 38th in the nation by US News and World Report. We are in a period of incredible innovation and sweeping ASHLEY TAGGART technological advances. For our Tribe to continue thriving, we must not only embrace, but also seek to Chief improve upon, the changes that previous officers and Councils of Elders have executed. We welcome 305.775.1278 the advice and support from any and all Tribe members, as we continue on this “pathway to greatness” [email protected] that was laid down so many years ago. MELISSA GULLER In our last business meeting of the spring semester, several matters were discussed that have Son of Chief created the groundwork for this new academic year. We intend to be more visible on campus. It is our 314.477.6143 mission as Iron Arrow to uphold the traditions of our Alma Mater and to be its living history. We will work [email protected] year-round to fulfill this mission, and we will continually ask ourselves if we are doing enough to meet the needs of current students. It is important that we, as a Tribe, are here for students to provide SHELBY JUAREZ encouragement and advice on how to get involved. To give incoming students a view of how Medicine Man remarkable our Tribe is – we placed an ad in “The Miami Hurricane’s First Impression” issue entitled “Iron 203.979.5388 Arrow Welcomes U”. In addition, our Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 tap class photos can be found in the [email protected] 2011-2012 edition of the “Ibis” Yearbook. Working with student publications will provide us with a good start to a great year of engaging with the UM community. Last, but certainly not least, we realize that it can be difficult for members who are not living in COUNCIL OF ELDERS Miami to stay connected with the Tribe. With this in mind, we have been working with the Council of JOHANN A. ALI Elders to create an online network, open only to the Tribe, through which members can contact each DAVID L. BROWN other. However, for this system to work, we MYLES A. COCHRAN need an overwhelming response from current members in their use of the networking DAVID McDONALD, Sr. system. We hope that through this system, we ELIZABETH M. RODRIGUEZ can all remain active in the Tribe and foster our MICHELLE A. WILLIAMS love for our Alma Mater from anywhere in the C. RHEA WARREN world. We look forward to seeing many of you at this year’s Tribal activities and UM community events. We welcome your input FACULTY ADVISOR and suggestions, and we thank you for your ANN M. HELMERS support and dedication to the Tribe. Yours in the Arrow, Ashley Taggart SPONSOR 2012-2013 Chief DONNA E.
