PREFACE The purpose of this book is to provide an insight into the possibilities of applying J. curcas for commercial purposes. Emphasis is placed on the biology, chemistry and potential uses of J. curcas and its derived ingredients. The book has thirteen chapters: (1) Seeds of Jatropha curcas L.: Diversity, Yield, Quality, Storage and Germination. This chapter discuss some important aspects of the J. curcas seeds in Tunisia as their diversity and yield, the effect of the season on seed quality and the percentage of aborted seeds as well as the effect of storage in plastic bag under ambient laboratory conditions on the germination rate. (2) Chemical Composition and Biological Activities of Jatropha curcas. This chapter summarizes the most important aspects of J. curcas species, in order to enable handle information to the reader. A brief description of the most distinctive taxonomy features, worldwide distribution and biosynthetic pathways of the secondary metabolites commonly isolated from it has been described, as well as a review of different biological activities reported for this species. (3) Jatropha curcas L.Publishers, Biomass Raw Materials: The Current State and Future Potentialities. This chapter deals to discuss different part of J. curcas L. biomass with its present applications and future potentialities. (4) Phytochemical Aspects of Jatropha curcas and its Application in Health. In this chapter the phytochemical studies in order to know the main metabolites are presented; as well as some functional and biological aspects of J. curcas. (5) Physic Nut (Jatropha curcas L.) Extracts and Active Compounds with Biological Activity Against Pest Insects and Pathogenic Fungi. This chapter document some work related to the use of J. curcas and its active compounds, contained in both the oil and the plant, to control some pests and microorganisms of agriculture interest. (6) Functional Potential of Jatropha curcas L. in Prevention and Treatment of Non Communicable Diseases. This chapter document some studies in vitro and in vivo that describe the antioxidant and anti- inflammatory potential of J. curcas as alternative in prevention and treatment of non communicable diseases (7) Biotechnological Applications of Protein Hydrolysates and Curcin from JatrophaScience curcas L. Seeds. This chapter open avenues for new applications of the proteins in the J. curcas plant, thereby enhancing the financial viability and sustainability of a Jatropha-based biodiesel industry. (8) Morphoanatomy and Ontogeny of the Fruit and Seeds of Jatropha curcas L.: A Promising Biofuel Plant. The purpose of this chapter is to describe the evolution of the development and main structures formed by J. curcas seeds and fruits four days after anthesis (DAA) to the completely ripe fruit at 58 DAA and to provide evidence that the seeds of this species are not waterproof and therefore dormant, as has Novawidely described in the literature. (9) Jatropha curcas: A sustainable feedstock for biodiesel viii Maira Rubi Segura-Campos and David Betancur-Ancona synthesis. In this chapter, the authors present the significance of J. curcas oil and the dependence of the feedstock to production route selection. The use of various catalytic approaches was
