This battle was a major victory for General Grant because it Vicksburg gave the Union control of the Mississippi River, splitting the Confederacy in two. Known as one of the bloodiest Battle of Gettysburg battles of the war. The Union won. One of the most famous and inspiring speeches given by President Abraham Lincoln during Gettysburg Address the dedication of the cemetery for the soldiers who died in this battle. He urged people to fight harder to save the Union. The town in Virginia where General Robert E. Lee Appomattox Courthouse surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865, ending the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln was April 14, 1865 assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s Theater. 13th Amendment Ended slavery forever. Gave food and supplies to freed slaves, helped white farmers rebuild their farms, The Freedmen’s Bureau built schools and hired teachers to teach the freed slaves. Farm workers were paid in land instead of money, and landowners took part of the Sharecropping crops and enough to cover rent and supplies at harvest time. Laws passed in the South to limit the rights of former slaves Not allowed to vote Not allowed to travel freely Black codes Could not own property or work in certain businesses Could be forced to work for free if they could find no other jobs Gave citizenship to all people 14th Amendment born in the United States- including former slaves. The rebuilding of the United States after the end of the Reconstruction Civil War-putting the country back together. People who support something for their own gain. Scalawag Nickname for Southerners who supported Reconstruction. Northerners who went to take advantage of the South, to try Carpetbagger to help with Reconstruction or to make money buying land or opening businesses. Separation of white and black Segregation people. No citizen could be kept from 15th Amendment voting because of race. .
