Wi... byUyniSmart There has always been a “ward” of the LDS church in Magrath. But the church was not always divided into wards. It wasn’t until the church was established in Nauvoo, Illinois that the church leaders found it neces sary to divide the members into units for the purpose of congregational worship. (Approx. early 1840s) The city of Nauvoo was divided into political units called wards, as were most early American cities. These “wards” helped to organize the local government and made the running of the city more efficient The ward boundaries became a natural way' to divide the members of the . church, as well. Church appointed bishops presided over these units and organized the church on a smaller scale. The wards allowed for the first time, church directed neighborhood worship. Brigham Young instructed bishops to “organize and watch over their wards, have weekly meetings therein; also see that those under their charge have work and that none suffer through want.” The instructions for the bishops of the church today are not a lot different than those instruc tions given over 150 years ago, < r —— — - I I 1 : Stitching • 1 i I 1 1 1 • Fabric • Patterns & Books i I • Notions • Sewing Classes i 1 » Custom Sewing & Alterations j ) i | HOURS: Tbes & Weil 10-6 pm; Thur 10-S:30 pm; Fri 10-5:30 pm; Sat 10-2 pm j 1 i Stephanie Humphreys and Donna Thompson 1 i J 50 North 1A Street East • phone: 758-3234 i L j meeting were treated to a brief history of the beginnings of the Town of Magrath along with a historical look at the organi Don’t forget to place your announcements zation of the IDS Church and the subsequent changes that in the Magrath News: have occurred as the population of Magrath has grown over • Births • Weddings • Engagements the last 100 plus years. ® Awards * Birthdays • Anniversaries The original Town of Magrath was surveyed and ! • Obituaries • Achievements mapped out in 92 ten acre lots. I Tuesday morning, members of the community gathered at the Tom Karren gym for the annual Remembrance Day Ceremonies. Master of Ceremonies, Devar Dahl read an email from Alan Dudley who is serving a mission for the LDS church in the Ukraine. Dudley said that he was thinking of the town today, and mentioned asking some Ukrainian people why they feel their country has so many struggles. Dudley said they think the problems their country suffers result from having no trust in God, no trust in Government, and the breakdown of the family.
