HOTELS Burj Al Arab, Dubai, UAE Client : Confidential Area : 111,500m2 Type : 321m high, G+53 super luxury Status : Complete Date : 1994-1999 The Burj Al Arab is for many people the defining image of Dubai, in much the same way that the Eiffel Tower serves Paris. Both symbolize their cities in a way we have come to call ‘iconic’, even though both were designed well before the word became ubiquitous. Beach Front Hotel Client : Confidential Area : 134,200m2 Type : 302m, five-star hotel and services apartments Status : Design Date : 1996 Ongoing The Beach Front Hotel occupies a key site at the southern tip of the Dubai marina front marina front and it bounded on three sides by water, like the Dubai Promenade which occupies the complementary position at the north end of the marina. The high quality hotel and serviced apartments and their related leisure and hospitality facilities align with different aspects of the site. Twisting Tower, Arabian Gulf Client : Confidential Area : 58,200m2 Type : 53-storey hotel Status : Concept Date : 2004 The inspiration for the Twisting Tower was the architect’s observation of the dynamics of a water spiral. The concept is translated into triangular floor plates that rotate around a central, full height circulation core which is stiffened with horizontal fins to resist torsional forces. Shanghai Harbor City Crowne Plaza Hotel, China Client : Shanghai Gang Cheng Development Corporation Area : 67,350m2 Type : 355 bed, five-star business and resort hotel located on an island Status : Under construction Date : 2006-2011 The concept for the low rise, 355 bed Shanghai Harbour City Crowne Plaza Hotel was developed from the award winning masterplan which Atkins proposed for its location, Lin Gang New Town, near Shanghai, Resting on an island in a 500ha circular lake at the centre of the new town, the design is both simple and striking and within the 15m height limit stipulated by the planning guidelines. RESIDENTIAL 9GG-9HH, DUBAI, UAE Client : Emaar Properties PJSC Area : 53552m2 Type : 50 floor tower on a six level podium with a spa, health centre, pool and retail space Status : Concept design Date : 2007 The Tower of Babylon, the world’s first truly tall building, was constructed in Arabia – in what is now Iraq –some 5000 years ago. Medieval images interpret it as a spiral structure rising towards the heavens, and it is they that provided the inspiration for 9GG-9HH. 2CDE Residential Development, Dubai, UAE Client : Ahmed Ramadhan Juma Establishment Area : 33,642m2 Type : 116m, 27-storey residential tower Status : under construction Date : 2005-2010 Dubai marina is the world’s largest man-made marian and 2CDE is the plot number for this residential development. At 116m in height, the tower is typical of many of the mixed-use residential and retail developments that skirt the periphery of the marina complex, and provides a mix of serviced apartments, penthouses and townhouse over 27 floors. Business Bay Executive Towers Dubai, UAE Client : Dubai properties Area : 300,000m2 Type : Five residential Towers varying in height from 27 to 47 storey Status : Complete Date : 2005-2009 The Business Bay Executive Towers project is located in the prestigious Business Bay precinct of Dubai, a short distance away from the tallest building in the world. Five individually sculpted, contemporary towers that vary in height from 27 to 47 storey rise form a two-storey podium, providing a total of 1,041 apartments ranging from spacious to luxury penthouses. Chelsea Tower Dubai, Client : Abdul Salam Alrafi Group Area : 65,920m2 Type : G + 50 Storey residential Tower Status : Complete Date : 2001-2004 One of the most visually arresting tower in Dubai is the 51-storey Chelsea apartments, with a accommodates 282 serviced apartments, with a swimming pool and leisure facilities on the roof of the separate nine-storey car park. Offices & Commercial The Riyadh Tower, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia Client : Al Ajlan Allied Group Area : 66,000m2 Type : 220m, 42-storey office development Status : Tender Date : 2009 ongoing The Riyadh Tower, located on King Fahd Road in downtown Riyadh, will be the city’s third tallest building after Kingdom Tower. As such, it will be highly visible and as a building of singular gesture will contribute to Riyadh’s evolving architectural character. Almas Tower, Dubai, UAE Client : DMCC (Dubai Multi Commodities Center). Area : 183,000m2 Type : Commercial, Retail and a diamond exchange center Status : Complete Date : 2005-2008 The home of the Dubai Diamond Exchange, Almas Tower, is the distinctive centerpiece of the city’s Jumeirah Lakes development. The two gracefully-interlocking elliptical towers of commercial accommodation gently taper as they rising 360m to the tip of the mast at the summit, making it the second tallest building in Dubai and the 18th tallest in the world. Bahrain World Trade Center, Manama, Bahrain Client : Confidence Area : 120,000M2 Type : 240m high twin tower office towers & shopping mall Status : Complete Date : 2003-2008 The brief called for the regeneration of a med-eighties commercial development and an under-used park on a superb sea-front site in Manama. Consideration of the context of the existing mall, and extending its major axes, suggested a framework for the introduction of twin commercial towers on a podium incorporating both existing and new shopping centres, restaurants, hotels and car parking. IRIS BAY DUBAI, UAE Client : Sheth Estate (International) Ltd Area : 36,000M2 Type : 170m high, 32-storey tower located in the business bay area Status : under construction Date : 2006-2010 Iris Bay is located at the south-west corner of the burgeoning Business bay district of Dubai, and sits adjacent to the main sheikh Zayed highway. The 170m high, 32-storey tower rests on a four storey podium containing entrance and retail facilities, a restaurant and café, a gymnasium, a swimming pool and shaded relaxation spaces on the podium roof. Mixed Use IRIS BAY DUBAI, UAE Client : Nakheel LLC Area : 42ha Type : High end, mixed-use, integrated community Status : Design Complete Date : 2008-2012 Dubai Promenade is formed on approximately 420,000m2 of reclaimed land extending from the southern corner of the Mina Seyahi entrance to Dubai Marina – the largest man made marina in the world and home to many residential, commercial and hotel developments. Centaurus Development, Islamabad, Pakistan Client : Pak Gulf Construction ltd Area : 3.3 million M2 Type : five mixed use buildings Status : Under Construction Date : 2005-2010 Centaurus is a mixed use development in the Blue Area of central Islamabad. It efficiently combines four different uses in a single building. Articulating each use with a separate building mass to be broken down into a more acceptable composition. Zero Carbon Urban Plaza and Convention Centre, Abu Dhabi, UAE Client : confidential Area : 60,000M2 Type : Mixed use commercial plaza & conference center Status : concept Design Date : 2008 The concept is sample; an urban oasis in the city where the undulating desert plain extends into an urban plaza that sprouts a grouping of plain extends into an urban plaza that sprouts a grouping of palm trees, whose fronds interlock to create a canopy sheltering the inhabitants below from the harsh desert environment. Al Salam Tecom Tower, Dubai, UAE Client : Abdulsalam Alrafi Group Area : 94,500m2 Type : 46-storey mixed use Status : complete Date : 2004-2008 The al Salam Tecom Tower is typical of many mixed use developments in the Middle East. It adopts what has become the basic layout for such developments, employing a retail and parking podium supporting a residential and office tower above. Sports & Leisure Zabeel Park Dubai, UAE Client : Dubai Municipality Area : 48ha Type : Technology theme park Status : complete Date : 2003-2005 Zabeel park is a 48ha technology theme park which has vitalized a previously vacant area, linking the original urban settlements of al karama and Al jafiliya to the DIFC, the new financial district. The ark occupies two sites on either side of a major highway, linked by a soaring, curved footbridge. Wild Wadi Aqua Park, Dubai, UAE Client : Confidential Area : 3ha Type : Themed Water park Status : complete Date : 1996-1999 The Wild Wadi is a fully themed Arabic water park which, when completed in 1999, had some of the most technically advanced rides in the world.
