Music and Malta were Richard’s passions. Raised in the Sydney suburb 2369 John VIII (1423-1448) Half Hyperpyron of Constantinople (S2563) of Manly he worked as a music producer at ABC radio in the 1960s and VF Est. $200 attended night school at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and Opera School. He became the first music director of the Victoria State Opera at the invitation of Dame Joan Hammond in 1972 at the age of 26, and continued with the company until it merged with Opera Australia in 1996; at which point he became the principal resident conductor until 2001. From the 1970s Richard became a keen observer and researcher of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and Malta.
