Section 14.0: Laboratory Tests Clinical Protocol Manual 14.4 GLYCOSURIA TITLE DESCRIPTION DEFINITION: A condition where glucose is excreted in detectable amounts in the urine. Some of the most common causes of glucose in the urine include: diabetes mellitus; hyperthyroidism; high sugar diet; benign glycosuria; liver cirrhosis; and emotion. SUBJECTIVE: May Include: 1. No symptoms. 2. Family history of diabetes. 3. Weight changes. 4. Fatigue, blurred vision, recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis. 5. History of gestational diabetes or birth weight of newborn 9 lbs. or greater 6. Polydipsia, polyphagia, or polyuria. 7. 20% over ideal body weight; sedentary lifestyle. 8. Race (higher incidence of diabetes among American Indian, Hispanic, and African American population). 9. History of hypertension, diabetes, Cushing’s disease, hemochromatosis pancreatitis. 10. History of decreased HDL and increased triglycerides. 11. History of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or Metabolic Syndrome. 12. Medication causing hyperglycemia (ex. antipsychotics). OBJECTIVE: Assess as Indicated: 1. Chronic vulvovaginitis. 2. Elevated BP. 3. Obesity (BMI > 25). 4. Peripheral neuropathy. 5. Complete physical exam LABORATORY: Must Include: 1. Urine dip stick – glucose > to 1+ with or without ketonuria. May Include: 1. Lipid panel (cholesterol, HDL, LDL, Triglycerides). 2. Chem 7. 3. Microalbuminuria. ASSESSMENT: Glycosuria. PLAN: 1. Repeat urine on fasting A.M. specimen. 2. Refer for further evaluation if repeat UA is +. EDUCATION: 1. Provide education regarding importance of follow-up for diagnosis and management. 2. Encourage exercise, dietary changes, and weight management. 3. Recommend client RTC as indicated. REFERRAL TO Abnormal laboratory tests or questionable significant findings.
