Research and Innovation REPORT: AIRLINES: AFRICA What you need to know August 2021 This report presents a roundup of what’s been happening to Africa’s airlines over the last month. Major carriers South African Airways Relaunch planned for September 23 SAA plans to resume operations on September 23, five months after emerging from the business rescue process. The airline will initially operate flights from Johannesburg to Cape Town, Accra, Harare, Kinshasa, Lusaka and Maputo. More destinations will be added in response to market conditions. Following its restructuring, SAA is now 51% owned by South African investment fund Harith General Partners and former Comair CEO and co-founder of South African airline LIFT, Gidon Novick. The South African government retains a 49% interest. Other airlines Airlink Emirates partnership expanded Airlink has expanded an existing partnership with Emirates to include code sharing on the South African regional airline’s services. The deal will give Emirates’ passengers access to more than 40 domestic and regional destinations across 12 African countries. CemAir Connections offered to Emirates’ passengers As it ramps up passenger services to South Africa, Emirates has signed its fourth airline partnership in South Africa. The new interline agreement with CemAir will enable its passengers to connect over its Cape Town and Johannesburg gateways to six domestic destinations: Bloemfontein, Durban, George, Hoedspruit, Kimberly, Margate, Plettenberg Bat and Sishen. Emirates already has interline and code share partnerships in place with Airlink, SAA and Flysafair. Comair Flights resume on September 1 With South Africa moving to an adjusted LEVEL 3 lockdown, South African carrier Comair has announced the restart of domestic services from September 1. The airline will resume both low-cost Kulula and British Airways franchised services. Page 1 Green Africa AOC secured Nigerian startup Green Africa received its air operator’s certificate (AOC) from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) ahead of a planned first flight on August 12. Initially flying between Lagos and Abuja, Green Africa plans to be operating 15 ATR 72 turboprops by 2022, enabling it to expand its Lagos links to include Akure, Enugu, Ilorin, Port Harcourt and Owerri.
