CAFE - MORNING -#1 RICKY NELSON - LONESOME TOWN PLAYS ON A RADIO 3 Plates clank as Graham enters a classic British builders cafe, his still dripping hair clings to his head. The cafe is mostly full. The tables are occupied by various townsfolk who are talking amongst themselves, their conversations are lost in RICKY NELSON'S LONESOME TOWN. Graham doesn't seem to take any notice of the mottled pale green walls or the matching laminate pine chairs and tables as he drifts towards the counter, which is at the far end of the room. MARIAH, 40's, stands behind the counter. In one hand she holds a spatula, the other she wipes on her white apron, it leaves a greasy stain. FRANK, 50's, stands beside her. He's heavily leaning on a till which is likely as old as he is. MARIAH Morning Graham, good swim? GRAHAM Morning. Didn't win any medals but it was good, yeah. Mariah smiles politely, appearing to only half-listen to Graham's reply. Graham returns the smile, seemingly happy to ignore the emptiness of the conversation. GRAHAM You'd best get practicing your breaststroke, can't be long now till you go on that cruise. Mariah lights up at the mention of the cruise, this time her smile seems genuine. MARIAH Oh yes, it's only a few months now, isn't it Frank? Frank gives a well practiced nod, having clearly mastered the art of pretending to listen. FRANK Morning Grey mate, hope you're well. Graham nods with a shrug. GRAHAM Ain't keeled over yet. Frank lets out a single wheezy laugh which could easily be mistaken for a cough or even a death rattle. MARIAH Usual is it? GRAHAM Yes please Mariah, number 3 and a tea. CUT TO: AT THE TABLE - Graham is sat at the table, he watches a WAITRESS bring over a pot of tea, it rattles in her shaky hands. He seems to take in her facial features as she places it on the table. GRAHAM First day eh? Don't worry you'll do fine. Just remember, if you’re about to drop something aim for Mariah. The Waitress smiles awkwardly, clearly not comfortable with the interaction, before walking away. Graham, overlooking his failed social attempt, peers down into his teacup with a vacant smile. He takes a loud slurp. CUT TO: A fry-up is brought to Graham's table and is placed in front of him with a clunk. Graham smiles with appreciation but the Waitress has already turned away. He scrapes up a overflowing forkful of food and shovels it into his mouth. Some beans escape and fall back onto the plate. CUT TO: Graham stares into the remaining bean juice on his plate. It slowly spreads outwards from the centre of the plate, trying to conquer any remaining clean spots. scene 2 INT. CAFE - MORNING -#2 Graham stands at the counter. Eyes closed, he rubs his black lightly and flexes his shoulders, his slightly pained expression gives way to indifference. He opens his eyes. FRANK Morning Grey ... MARIAH Hurt ya back have you Graham? GRAHAM Lost a few vertebrae in the pool. Bit of bacon will patch me up though. Graham winks at Frank. Frank sputters, he rasps as he begins his cough/laugh hybrid, which soon turns to a full blown coughing fit. Graham waits for him to finish. GRAHAM (CONT) Number 3 and a tea please ... AT THE TABLE -- Graham looks around at the other tables, no one looks back. He inhales deeply, seeming to take pleasure in the moment. He smiles comfortably to himself. A teapot plonks down in front of him. Graham looks up, it's the same Waitress as before. GRAHAM Thank you lovely CLOSE UP OF MOUTH Graham takes a big slurp. A trickle of tea runs down the side of his mouth, he licks it. A plate full of food slides onto the table. CLOSE UP OF MOUTH Graham shoves a fork of food into his mouth. scene 3 INT. CAFE - MORNING. #3 Graham begins to walk up to the counter as we watch through the window, distorted slightly by various reflections. His hair is soaking wet, it drips onto the floor. He's looking ahead of him towards the counter. Frank stands there alone. Graham appears to be assessing the situation. He nods at Frank, who nods back. FRANK Morning grey mate! Good swim? GRAHAM Morning, yeah not too bad. Where’s Mariah? FRANK Oh ye, she's dead Grey mate. Number 3 is it? Graham, clearly taken aback, stares at Frank with disbelief for a moment. GRAHAM W.. What? God I'm sorry Frank, what happened? FRANK Hmm? GRAHAM To Mariah? FRANK Ah, well, I mean... Frank thinks for a second FRANK (CONT) Yesterday, she just up and died. Bit of a shame really. Frank smiles at Graham, who doesn't know how to react in his state of shock. FRANK So, Number 3 was ... GRAHAM That's awful, all those plans she had for the cruise ... FRANK Ah, they were just plans Grey mate, doubt we would have actually gone. Frank chuckles, just about managing to limit the ensuing coughing fit to a few short strained exhales. Graham frowns deeply, unable to hide a troubled expression. Through repeated blinks his eyes search for something which isn't there. FRANK The usual then? GRAHAM (MUMBLES) 3 and a tea, please, yeah. AT THE TABLE -- Graham sits, seeming confused, he stares blankly at nothing as he tongues his cheek. A tea is put on the table in front of him. He doesn't touch it, his stare unbroken. The tonguing continues. A fry up slides onto the table. It has all the same ingredients as before apart from the bacon, which is missing. Graham frowns and looks up to the counter. Frank, holding Mariah's spatula in one hand, is doing miscellaneous tasks. Graham looks back to his plate. He scoops up a fork of food, he's seemingly unsatisfied by it. CLOSE UP OF MOUTH Graham shoves a baconless fork of food into his mouth and chews. He looks dissatisfied. cliff scenes scene 1 EXT. ON TOP OF CLIFF - AFTERNOON - #1 The cliff looms over the small provincial town. From the ledge, the activities of the inhabitants seem minuscule and insignificant, the people are ant-like in size. Wind wails as it beats against the protruding cliff-face, the thin grass that covers the outcrop ripple like waves in the ocean. A wooden leg penetrates the hard soil, it wiggles slightly before sinking in further. Graham, dressed in slightly smarter clothes than before, licks his lips as he concentrates on his actions. His hair now dry. He runs his hand across the smooth surface of a white canvas. scene 2 EXT. ON TOP OF CLIFF - AFTERNOON - #2 Graham begins by applying a light paint on the canvas, similar to the way Bob Ross begins an ambiguous painting, showing no details and only smears of one colour. [KEEP AMBIGUOUS, MACRO DETAILS OF BRUSH PAST LENS] He pours turpentine into a small porcelain cup which has various paint streaks on it. scene 3 EXT. ON TOP OF CLIFF - AFTERNOON. #3 Graham is alone. The town below grinds onward, unchanged. He paints for a while, his body still hides his landscape. scene 4 EXT. ON TOP OF CLIFF - AFTERNOON. #4 Graham leans back in his chair, revealing a beautifully detailed landscape of the town and some boats in the distance. He admires it with a reluctant smile, it's short-lived and soon begins to fade. After a few seconds he's left staring at it with unfocused eyes and a blank expression. He grasps his paintbrush tightly, his knuckles go white. Graham leans forward and stares at the painting for a few moments. He begins thrusting the paintbrush through the canvas, it pierces it with a soft pop. His eyes come into focus but his expression remains unchanged as he stabs the painting again, the canvas wobbles.
